“You sure?” Grace asked.
“Yup,” Danny countered.
“Pleeeeeeease?” She batted her eyelashes.
“Oh! Oh! Where did you learn that?! Put that away,” he said playfully. “That’s evil.”
His daughter beamed.
“Okay, I’ll think about it,” Danny agreed. “Go get your pajamas on.”
Grace high tailed it.
Steve, who’d been watching the whole exchange, regarded his partner with a quizzical look. Before Danny had a chance to explain, Grace was back in her pajamas.
“Look at you. My little quick change artist,” he teased. “Have you brushed your teeth?”
She nodded vigorously.
“Okay. Bring it over.”
She grabbed a book out of her library bag and rushed back. The title read “Hardy Boys”.
“You’re kickin’ it old school now, huh?”
“Mom says they’re good.”
“They are,” he assured her. “I used to read these when I was a kid.”
She glanced up at him hopefully, waiting.
“Alright,” he finally said. “Two chapters. No more.”
“Thanks, Daddy,” she said, planting a quick kiss on his cheek before running away.
“Night, Monkey!” he called after her.
“Night!” The door slammed behind her.
“You do this every night, don’t you?” Steve asked, amused.
“She’s got me well trained.”
