Don't forget that Rutgers freshman who committed suicide due to his roommate and a friend of the roommate invading his privacy. They remotely accessed the roommate's webcam, posted twitter updates about him having sex then streamed it live.
I know - I read that and was almost sick to my stomach. How do people do this to each other? It's just evil. And you know the little bastards who did it are gonna get off scot-free. *gnashes teeth*
What angers me about this is that they show no remose at all. They deserve to have their lives ruined. There are consquences with every action and thus those two deserve to experience those consquences.
You said you had no pity for suicidal people because they made up their own minds, and they chose to deal with their issues that way.
Yes, it's tradgic that these kids killed themselves. Yes, these bullies need to be punished, and no one is getting away with anything. But these kids killed themselves.
About 600 - 900 people kill themselves everyweek in North America, many of them teenagers. Bullies have been around since there was more than one human. It bothers me that no one has cared about either problem until now.
Okay, you know what? I still feel that way - for emo-whiners and criers who do these things for ATTENTION. I've known far too many people who threatened to kill themselves on a regular basis (try every other day for three years in high school) - they make it a JOKE
( ... )
All of these deaths are a true shame. Tyler Clementi hit especially hard, since I live in New Jersey and Rutgers' main campus is less than an hour away from where I live and they share a satellite campus with the college I teach for--and I teach at that campus.
While Jersey's hardly a bastion of tolerance and progressivism, we usually are one of the more "civilized" states when it comes to homosexual rights. The fact that this student had to go through something like this and the people in charge didn't react strongly and immediately to what is clearly a serious crime is saddening.
Almost as saddening as the fact that there is still such blatant discrimination against people in what's supposed to be a progressive first-world country.
It just boggles my mind that there are still people out there who seem to care so much about people's private lives to the point they'll drive them to this. It's just all so hateful and pointless.
I didn't know you were that close to the campus. How's the reaction since then? Generally speaking?
