Summary: A minute before Roderich is supposed to leave for his wedding, his best man Gilbert wants to have a little talk with him.
Note: The German sentence in the end means something like "You're hitting on me". I can't translate it, it's a quote from a movie ((T)Raumschiff Surprise).

For what felt like the hundredth time, Roderich tried to fix his already perfect sitting tie. He had planned in too much time for getting dressed before his wedding an was now so nervous that he couldn’t even think straight.  All the time his mind kept wondering to how beautiful Elizabeta would look and that he didn’t want to be a disgrace to her.
Just when he was about to retie his tie all over again, the door opened. “Hey, it’s only one minute left, are you ready?” Gilbert asked as he entered. His arms were crossed in front of his chest and he seemed to be unwilling to even be here.
“Just a second. The tie’s still crooked,” Roderich mumbled. He didn’t want to tell him that he had been ready for half an hour yet.
“Let me see,” Gilbert answered. He came over and laid his hands on the tie. A few pulls, then he stepped back and looked at his work. Shook his head and tried again. “Roderich,” he suddenly started. “Why me?”
It took a moment for Roderich to realize that he had been spoken to, he had been so distracted by the other man’s pale hands at this neck. “Why you what?” he asked.
“Why did you ask me to be your best man?” His voice was so low, almost inaudible.
Roderich shook his head. “Why did you agree to it?” A sigh. “I, sort of, trust you. And without you, it wouldn’t be right. That’s why.”
“Why you and not Elizabeta?” Gilbert went on, his hands now pausing at the tie. “She and I, we have been friends since our childhood. I know her much longer than you and it wouldn’t be … you know, awkward.”
“You are aware that Elizabeta knows about our … common past, aren’t you? And she doesn’t mind you being my best man. In fact, it was her idea to begin with.”
“But why?”
“So you would be here,” Roderich sighed. “We all know that you wouldn’t have come here but rather stayed at home sulking and claiming that it is so much more ‘awesome’ to be alone than married.” As Gilbert was about to protest, he raised his index finger in front of him and continued: “That’s why I asked you. Gilbert, this way, I, we, wanted to show you that you are still an important part of our lives and that you always will be. You are my wife’s best friend, you have always been a good friend to me. It seemed logical to ask you. And I would make this choice all over again.” He smiled. “So please don’t run away now. It’s about time for me to be ready and I need my best man by my side.”
With a last pull on Roderich’s tie, Gilbert turned around grinning. “Okay, then I will be the best damn best man you can possibly have. Oh, and Specs?” He looked over his shoulder. “Hurry, or we will be late. And don’t get lost.”
Smiling, Roderich took the offered hand. “I won’t.”
“You’re sure that we’re nothing more than friends?” Gilbert laughed. “Du glühst mich an,” he added with a fake accent.
“Shut up”, Roderich mumbled. “That’s just the kind of thing Elizabeta loves more than I’d like her to do.”
With Gilbert laughing, they headed for the altar.
