"That, and isn't it a dead giveaway when Superman returns to Earth after five years away, and so does Clark Kent?"
In response, Clark Kent can go on a sabbatical without millions, if not billions, of people giving a damn. Only a few dozen people would know enough to notice Clark Kent on sabbatical coincides with Superman's disappearance. Of course many of those few dozen people are theoretically crack investigative reporters but that opens up a different can of worms.
I'm not saying everyone in Metropolis will figure it out, but I will say that Perry White, Lois Lane, and Jimmy Olson may be suspicious. Maybe Lex Luthor too, if he has any knowledge of Clark Kent, that is.
You're right, but when most of the mediums Superman is shown in seems to keep up the pretense that by taking off his glasses and adjusting his hair he suddenly looks like a completely different person and this fools everyone you just mentioned. Throw in the whole, "have you ever seen Clark and Superman in the same room?" and "You know, when Superman went missing for five years, I don't recall seeing Clark Kent at all". The inescapable conclusion is that every person Clark Kent and Superman have mutually met face to face are morons.

How Clark has kept Superman a secret is that no one would ever think meek, clumsy Clark could ever be Superman. It would be like assuming you were Superman. However, a five year absence, instead of just running away when danger is a foot is too big to overlook.
