IMODO, looking for realism in Bond movies is a waste of time, but if that's your angle, you should have included Dr. No and For Your Eyes Only in your list. Fr Your Eyes Only has the second best Bond Girl (behind Honor Blackman) in Carole Boquet, who went on to become a legit actress in French cinema, and good character acting by Topol and Julian Glover. And in Dr. No, Bond was just taking NO shit from NO body. ("That's a smith and Wesson, and you've had your six.)"

Well... realistic escapism is really what I meant. Of course it's still a complete fantasy world in many ways, but I like the stuff that's more toned down than say... something way out there and silly like Die Another Day. I agree that Dr. No and FYEO are realistic too, but I'm just not as big a fan of those as the five I listed. Dr. No definately had some atmosphere to it, but the producers and Connery were still finding their way with the series at that point. Some of the other characters really aren't that great. I like FYEO, it's similar to FRWL in that it has Bond going after a MacGuffin device, and really just lets the strong characters build the story up, and also features a lukewarm ending, Bond doesn't actually win, but he doesn't lose either. There are two things that stop me from having FYEO on my top five... 1. The pre-title sequence is ridiculous. The only reason they brought the unnamed Blofeld back was to kill the character off before Kevin McClory could make Never Say Never Again. 2. The music... I loathe the score to

I never understood the point of taking over the world & destroying it. What do you have to show for that? There's no notoriety after it's all over. There will be no legend if the world has ended.
I've never really gotten into the Bond movies, but hearing how eloquently everyone's speaking of them makes me think I might've missed out on some gold.

Isn't destoying the world more of a metaphor? You know, destroy the world... as we know it? Not literally, but destroy the world, then pick up the pieces and put them back together in your image.
