As a side-note, you may want to mention that it's a "flexible squares" theme, as it took me a while to find the right one. :D (it seems to work, so I think I got it right?)

I love these :) I'm using number 2, with credit. Unfortunately there seems to be a problem in that the sidebar doesn't seem to be level with the top entry, and is slightly higher. This could just be my laptop doing funny things to the layout, but if it's not, any idea what could be happening or how to fix it?

Not your laptop doing funny things (orz) I'm really sorry.

I have fixed the code and you can c&p again now or change the top-margin in .sidebar to -14px and that would do. Still, sorry for the inconveniences.
