tobreakthespell is a fandom-wide fest that challenges participants to create Merlin fanworks based on fairy tales. Our hope is to inspire a wide variety of genres and fanworks: fanfiction, fanart, fanvids, and fanmixes centered around any or no pairings are all fair game.

1. Fanfic should be at least 1000 words in length; art should be held to a similar “1000-word” equivalent standard. Fanmixes should include between ten and twenty songs.

2. All pairings, ratings, and genres are accepted. Gen, het, slash, and femslash are all welcome here.

3. Only one person or team can claim each prompt; you may not claim a prompt which has already been claimed by someone else.

4. All stories must be betaed before posting. We will make a post for beta requests and beta offers once the sign-up period ends, so check those for people who will be glad to help you out. If after that you need help finding a beta please email the mods at tobreakthespell [at] gmail [dot] com.

5. All submissions must be drawn from the Merlin universe; sorry, no crossovers or RPF will be accepted. Note: This does not exclude AUs. By limiting this to the Merlin universe, we mean only that all characters (excluding any OCs you may choose to include) used in submissions must originate in either Merlin, the show, or the broader canon of the Arthurian legends. Elements beyond that -- setting, plot, what have you -- are under no such restrictions. The purpose of this rule isn't to be limiting or implicitly judgmental; rather, we are hoping to keep this challenge on-track as it was originally envisioned: inspiration for fans to explore the universe and characters of Merlin in relation to fairy tales. We hope you'll understand.

6. Sign-ups for Round 1 will begin October 24, 2009 and will run through November 7, 2009. Entries will be due January 30, 2010. Posting will begin on February 6, 2010.

7. Submissions should be emailed to the mods at tobreakthespell [at] gmail [dot] com.
