R is for Reification, I is for If You Left, H is for Hares and Hounds, X is for Xena Studies
I have a lot of fics to write up today. Including two T fics in my last batch left me with 16 free spaces even though I have been posting the fics by fives. I planned to include six fics in this post to get things synced up again, but then I accidentally read two fics for the letter D, meaning that there are seven for me to talk about here.
Sometime last month, I watched a handful of episodes from the initial season of Supernatural. I enjoyed the first five seasons of that show when I first saw it maybe ten years ago. I liked it less this time, but I poked around the fanfic a little before moving on. One thing I found was
The Only Thing by
reapertownusa, a fic that I remembered from my original dabbling in this fandom. It is an unusual hurt/comfort story set after Dean's return from Hell. It's not for everyone, but it is well written, and I found it interesting and plausible. 1,962 words. Gen.
Dharma and Jim by Sheffield is a crossover between The Sentinel and the 90s sitcom Dharma and Greg, which I saw a few times during its original run. It's a cute story. There is not a lot of narrative meat, but it was enjoyable as far as it went. I liked that it made "Blair" a name he chose himself. That never seemed to me like the sort of thing Naomi would have picked circa 1970. 1,938 words. Basically gen.
Not remembering that I had read a D fic a couple of weeks before, yesterday I read
Don't Sing Tam Lin by
jat_sapphire. This is ostensibly a Starsky and Hutch AU fic, but it has very little connection to that show. I still loved it. It is a beautifully crafted and moving story with wonderful atmosphere. 5,952 words. Starsky/Terry Roberts het and Sarsky/Hutch slash. Particularly recommended.
Reification by Paper_Crane_Song is an A-Team story. It is a strange, conceptual five-times fic that I found tucked away in my Beloved Collection. I don't really get it, but find it compelling nevertheless. 1,241 words. Gen. Particularly recommended.
I did not enjoy
If You Left, an original series Battlestar Galactica fic by an anonymous author. I was irritated by the fic's reasoning about Apollo and Starbuck's relationship, which devalues friendship in favor of romantic love. Nor did I like the writing or the fact that the fic brings up a question it seems to forget to answer. 339 words. Apollo/Starbuck slash.
On the other hand,
Hares and Hounds by DarthNickles, a long Raffles fic, was thoroughly enjoyable despite the itchy discomfort I always feel rooting for the criminals. It is well plotted and absorbing, and the author has done a commendable job with the character voice for Raffles's first-person narration. Not only that, but there is no tiresome sex scene at the end. Woo! The fic does have a lot of errors, mostly spare or missing words, but I did not find them too troublesome. 31,306 words. Raffles/Bunny slash. Particularly recommended.
Xena Studies by StarWatcher is a second short Sentinel fic that references another 90s TV show. In this fic, Blair and Jim watch Xena, Warrior Princess. I've never seen that series, but I found this fic really charming. Its characterizations are perfect. 1,203 words. Gen. Particularly recommended.
