Multifandom Fic Bingo Round Two: S is for Scales, F is for Fawns and Snakelets...

I read several Harry Potter AUs during my last round of multifandom fic bingo, and I've kicked off this round with some more.
The Harry Potter fics Scales, Fawns and Snakelets, and Post-Script by SpaceWall form an AU series called To Take Another Course, which details events as they might have unfolded had Snape been sorted into Gryffindor.
The first fic, Scales, tells the story of Snape's time at Hogwarts with the rest of the Marauder generation. This fic has a meaty plot and a lot of interesting ideas about how the relationships among its characters might have unfolded. I enjoyed it wholeheartedly until the very end, when there was a plot development that I didn't feel had sufficient antecedents earlier in the story. The next fic, Fawns and Snakelets, picks up soon after Scales left off; it concerns itself with the time from the infancy of Harry's Hogwarts class through their seventh year at school. Given my dissatisfaction with the ending of Scales, I almost didn't read this one, but I'm glad I did. If one is willing to simply accept the plot development at the end of that fic, this one really delivers. It tells an affecting and suspenseful story, and is inventive in reshaping the events of canon in light of its altered timeline. 25,511 words. Post-Script is a short addendum to the series. I didn't find it as compelling as the other two fics, mainly because it's a relationship-based fic, and I don't buy the relationship. Harry/Draco fics just don't work for me. 1,286 words. Harry Potter/Ginny Weasley/Draco Malfoy polyamory.
Next I read something from my Beloved Collection: The Electric Fizzing Prick Pistols, or Whatever by whitmans_kiss. This is a Harry Potter soulmate marks AU. I've seen people opining that soulmate AUs are hopelessly adolescent, but I've read quite a few that I like. There are six of them in my collection (four of which are in the Man from U.N.C.L.E. movie fandom, for some reason). Maybe I'm adolescent, too. Anyway, if you enjoy this trope, this is a fun bit of fluff. It's got an amusing narrative style and good representations of the teenage Marauders. 3,816 words. Sirius Black/Remus Lupin slash with Lily Evans/James Potter het. Particularly recommended.
nuclear winter by almostannette is another soulmate marks AU, in this case, one of the four I have collected based on the Man from U.N.C.L.E. movie. This fic identifies itself as inspired by The Electric Fizzing Prick Pistols, or Whatever, but it is very different in tone. Where that fic is lighthearted, this one is solemn. It is equally good, however, if not better. Its take on the soulmate mark trope is certainly more unusual. 2,040 words. Gen (according to the author). Particularly recommended.
