Book #1 Brothers in Arms

Brothers In Arms (Vorkosigan Saga Part 12 (chronological order)) by Lois McMaster Bujold

Miles is taking some time on Earth to repair the Dendarii Mercenaries' fleet. It's way less restful than it sounds, and it takes some creative lying and the invention of a clone to get both his Barrayaran embassy guests and the enemies of the Dendarii off his back.

The last thing he expected is an actual clone of his to turn up.

I loved this installment so much! It reminded me of why I like Bujold's writing. Miles is a great protagonist, it never gets boring around him. You know he's going to survive, but still the stakes are high. Last year, I only read Chalion, which I did not like very much, and I am happy to find that I still like Miles *a lot*.

* I really liked Galeni, the embassy captain who was kidnapped along with Miles. I was so glad he didn't die!!

* I loved how Miles never wavered in his brotherly loyalty towards his clone. He is such a decent guy, and he managed to stick to that right to the very end. I respected that a lot.

* I liked Mark, too, to be honest. And I totally understood that no matter how Miles tried to convince him, he just didn't have the experience to believe him. I found it all very logical.

- The only thing I am not too excited about is how Miles is still so focused on sex. I got that when he was 17, but he's what now? 23? A little less testosterone would have been nice.

* I liked how his chosen bride Elli totally did not match his expectations. Like, at all! That was unusual for Bujold, who tends to easily pair up her characters. I am spoiled as to who Miles is going to marry (although I haven't read a single book in which she appears yet), so it wasn't that much of a surprise that Ellli turned him down. But I liked it.

* I already mentioned it above: the plot is a typical Miles rollercoaster and it didn't get boring once. That is what scifi should always be like!

Couldn't have been any better. 5 out of 5 stars.

1 - 5 stars - Brothers In Arms [DW]

(I already read this book in January but was too lazy to write up the review until now (that I've already finished the second book).)
