~ I've come to the conclusion that Ohio is like the Kevin Bacon of US states. Everyone has some connection to Ohio, it seems, even crazy foreigners like me

I was born and raised in Ohio, and have never lived outside the state lines. I think the reason everyone has a connection is that so many Ohioans escape. I always said I would, then I moved from Cincinnati (conservative, racial problems, high per capita of rednecks) to the NE area around Cleveland (more liberal, accepting, etc). So the state has something for everyone.
I suppose Cincinnati's close proximity to Kentucky might account for its high ratio of rednecks and conservatives? I've only been there briefly (albeit overnight) to catch a flight, so I really don't know the city well. My stays in Ohio have all been in Columbus, where Charles used to live.
Yup, the closeness to Kentucky is the biggest factor. One cool aspect of Cinti is that many surviving Civil War era homes have hidden rooms and passages from the Underground Railroad. We were told back in school that the Ohio River was considered a divider of the north and south back then. Dunno how true that is, but the line seems to have scootched northward since!
