The Blowoff Poster Art of Linas Garsys

Apr 20, 2007 11:32

Thanks to Matt/badfaggot for showing me his Blowoff CD between tacos and ice cream the other night, for turning me onto the poster art of the immensely talented Linas “Pat” Garsys that he does for the band.

I’m actually not sure if these designs get executed as posters or only as postcards, but the work is certainly worthy of it, I think it’s some of the best poster art and design I’ve seen since David Lance Goines, which is saying a lot. I’m not sure if Blowoff’s Bob Mould and Rich Morel, and the designer for that matter, are that much into product, but I think some of these images should get onto T-shirts, I’m sure they’d sell.

The first six posters were done in the style of Russian constructivist propaganda posters (I love the faux wear he did to some of the 2005 posters, click through to see), then the artist moved on to the genre of circus sideshow posters, and a stunning pair of boxers reprised some imagery (and possible fetish) of Mesrrs. Mould and Morel from a flyer done for Blowoff before they had the design services of Garsys (two other early flyers used a picture of two dogs in transport cages, and a locking chromed cockring). The later designs are more freely associated but all predominantly feature the subspecies we have come to identify as musclebear.

Garsys on his website says some of his other influences are punk music, Lithuanian folk art, Victorian patterns, pop art, and low-brow art. There isn’t a lot of homoeroticism in his work for other bands (mostly post-punk, it appears) or commercial work, but I suspect Garsys is a member of the tribe as well, either that or Mould and/or Morel are sharing their Bear magazines and favorite musclebear URLs with him.

Click to see more of Linas Garsys’ impressive work for Blowoff. Safe for work, but plenty testosteronilicious!

By the way, Bob Mould has an excellent blog (which is where I glommed most of these images from), which you can read on your LJ Friends Page by adding bob_mould. You can read Matt/badfaggot’s post about Bob Mould’s NYC gig here. Matt’s looking for buddies who may want to head down to DC for one of Blowoff’s Big Sweaty Half-Naked Male Dance Parties, as well as a cheap place to crash, so if any of you have any suggestions, you can post them here.
