“I… misunderstood. Truly.” He couldn’t bring himself to meet her gaze. “I… apologize.”
The flowers forced their way through the ruined floorboards in silent rebuke, in defiance of his suspicion, of the bitterly cold air, of the urban nightmare their haven dwelt in. Not even his legendary paranoia could interpret this as anything but a miracle.
She laid a hand on his arm, and he was able to refrain from flinching. “Sephiroth…” She sighed. “This wasn’t my idea.” She squeezed. “I love him too.”
He placed a hand over hers. The new fall of powder seemed to sanctify their accord.

“Sephiroth, this is beautiful!” The general’s apartments were a study in simple elegance, cherrywood and black lacquer.
He arched an eyebrow sardonically as he shrugged out of his coat. “Well, you know what they say,” he rejoined lightly.
“I didn’t mean…” She blushed furiously. “I… your home is lovely. That’s all.”
“Thank you.” He gestured to the silk futon. “May I bring you anything?”
She sat down, balanced precariously on its edge. “No, I… no.”
He settled himself beside her.
“I’ve never been in this situation,” Aeris said.
“No,” Sephiroth replied. “I’ve never…”
He lowered his lips to her throat.

Aeris giggled. “Is there something I ought to know about?”
He chuckled. “Entirely different paradigm.” He tugged the coverlet over her. “Though, now you mention it…”
Smiling, she snuggled against him; he froze, then spooned her awkwardly, trying to mold his body to hers. She nearly jumped when he bent to nibble her ear, but forced herself to relax and enjoy the caress.
There were worse things to build a relationship on than love.
They both jumped when the door opened with a bang.
“You started without me!” Zack’s face was a picture of dismay.

“This is very complex,” Sephiroth remarked at length. “Logistically, I mean. I feel as if we ought to have… oh, I don’t know, flowcharts.”
Zack, head resting on her thighs, laughed delightedly. “You are such a dork! Shall I plot it for us next time?”
Aeris groaned, stretching languorously. “We have moved pretty far beyond tab A into slot B. Maybe a diagram? How many permutations can there be?”
“Not nearly enough,” Zack purred, easing a hand between Sephiroth’s thighs. “Perhaps a spreadsheet…”
“Keep going and you’ll draw back a stump,” the general replied pleasantly.
Aeris laughed at them both.

“Oh? You find that funny?” Sephiroth levered himself to his hands and knees; Zack prudently got out of the way as he moved to straddle Aeris.
She laughed again, reaching up to dig her nails into his narrow hips. “You blush so prettily.”
“Blush? Blush?” She cut off any further argument with a kiss, her fingers tangling in his long silver mane.
Zack regarded the tableau with pride and no small amount of unease. This was what he wanted, wasn’t it?
He rolled over to join them. “Think you’re off the hook? Good for the gander, good for the goose!”
