Ukitake had come out on deck a little early - it was nice to be able to enjoy the view, the slight breeze and the warm sunlight. The last six months had been rough, but springtime and a new assignment both promised that things would go up from here. His uniform jacket had been left in his quarters - he was off-duty, for the moment - though Sougyo no Kotowari still hung at his belt, the warm, friendly comfort of the sword spirits a constant hum in the back of his mind.

After a few minutes, he realized he wasn't alone on the deck. A green-haired woman with swords - Zeetha, his mind supplied - was practicing intently, flipping the swords and catching them again. He watched silently for a few minutes, and then finally, spoke up with a grin. "Nice trick, there." And that was really what it was - a trick. Showy, but not a fighter's move. Still, her skill and poise spoke of a certain amount of actual talent.

"They can absorb and redirect magical attacks, on top of being a pair of rather fine blades," Ukitake replied with a smile. "That's what the connection is for - to channel the energy." He lifted both swords up so the red cord connecting them was clearer, the silver charms jangling slightly as he did so.

"They're old swords, though, and I'm fairly certain they've not taught me all their secrets yet," he added, chuckling slightly. Trying to get answers out of the twins was a bit like dealing with very contrary children, sometimes - and they treated half of life like a game.

"Very useful," she said, and meant it. A sword with a generalized ability to deal with attacks like that would be her ideal choice, because it prevented it from being weak against any specific elemental attacks or any type of magic. Zeetha liked a well rounded, multi-purpose weapon.

To her eyes, the charms on the cord looked like silver versions of the paper charms she had seen sometimes around Solare. She knew some things about the magical systems of Reial, but not as much as she liked.

"Are they a family heirloom?" she asked.

Ukitake dropped the blades to his sides again, and shook his head. "No, it was a gift from one of my mentors, when I graduated from the military academy. Even without it's special powers, a blade this fine would be a little beyond my family's means. He said it suited me, at the time - and now I know it's nature, I'm inclined to agree."

"How fortunate," she said. "You get the best results when your weapon is in tune with your nature."

She supposed she had been lucky when it came to resources because of her family's position.

"What is it your family does?" she asked.

Ukitake smiled, and brought the two swords back together - with a small flash of energy, they were one sword again. "They're merchants, in Melior. Textiles, mostly. One of my younger brothers runs things for the most part."
