Actually, I have very little to add. Yes, it's horrific. Yes, the internet allows for bullying in a way we haven't seen before. And, no, I have nothing sociological to add. Just pretty pissed off and sad. I was utterly miserable in junior high, picked on for no particular reason, and that was one reason I wanted to homeschool my kids (though then both kids spent some time in junior high--of course). Took me til my mid-twenties to get over it. When people asked me about socialization, I was always inclined to bring being beaten up, etc. up to them: "Is that what you mean by socialization? 'Cause thanks but no thanks." But no, nothing helpful to add, I'm afraid...
Trish= I think you added something very important in fact...that what lots of people belittle and minimize as 'kids just being kids' in fact has long lasting effects, often negative. And in truth later I think many bullies feel guilty and resentful and even horrified by their own casually cruel behavior. One friend of mine who was a very popular cheerleader stood OUT because she refused to be arrogant and cruel to the obvious 'target' kids. She was remarkable in that she was the kind one...even while being in one of those elevated high school social positions. How sad that it was so unique.

This is a quote that always comforts me, however far off justice might seem on a given day. My heart weeps for those poor kids.
