The Art of Writing Locke

Meet John Locke. For a lot of people, the revelation that he'd been in a wheelchair before crashing on the island was the moment that captured their interest. Since then we've seen him deal with his relationship with his father, his crisis of faith as he began to doubt the purpose of the button, his preparation to become leader of the Others. We've ( Read more... )

5. As it stands now and as per my previous answer, I think the whole “special” thing was a great big scam by Smokey to get Jacob killed and to try to get himself off the Island, a long con. Locke was especially susceptible to it because he’d been rejected and devalued his whole life, and because he hadn’t been able to accept his paralysis and the physical limitations it imposed. The miraculous restoration of his body and the prospect of becoming a leader were incredibly validating for him, but it was all taken away in about five minutes, like every other good thing in his life, so he’s not feeling too special in the timeframe of my story. He believes he’s a failure and has to die. I would have liked to see him figure out he’d been screwed over, like Ben did ( ... )

I'll have to read that!

Yes, that pissed me off about how it was all taken away before he got the chance to become leader - I wish we'd got to see what he'd have been like in that role!

I'm struggling with the sideways universe as well, it's sparked very little to date!

Yes, get rid of Smokey (who I think caused the conflict - says she who hasn't seen The Package yet, so if that contradicts that, I don't want to know) and see how things are for them!

I've never actually thought about writing Locke fic. I'm not sure if it's because I struggle to identify with his 'faith', or if it's because I don't overly care what happens to him. The only time I've written him was in an AU, and he ended up not being the nicest of characters. I think this is mostly because of some of the flashbacks being partly unbelievable, and mostly a little stupid.

In a way I'm disappointed that Island!Locke had such a sad ending, which is why I have to admit that I want Sideways!Locke to find peace and happiness.

I wasn't happy about the ending he received either, there seemed no need for it. I haven't really written him in the sideways universe, but that's really more about my issues with writing in that universe as a whole and how I don't feel I know any of the characters as well.

My least favourite of Locke's flashbacks was probably Further Instructions - that seemed a pretty pointless piece of backstory, and that episode could have been given over to someone else who hasn't had that many centric episodes!
