GUYS, GUYS, THIS IS SO AWESOME

Aug 20, 2010 22:02

So I have always been intensely jealous of people who had childhood slash OTPs (even if they didn't realise that's what they were at the time), because before I came across actual slash for the first time I was mostly inclined to root for whatever canon het TPTB pushed at me.

BUT.

I am currently re-reading The Eagle of the Ninth by Rosemary Sutcliff, which my mum read to me when I was, like, six, or something, and OMG. THIS BOOK IS SO SLASH. I HAVE A CHILDHOOD SLASH OTP AND THEY ARE MARCUS/ESCA. AND THEY ARE WONDERFUL.

I'm only on chapter 11 out of 21 (and I can't remember how the rest goes EVEN SLIGHTLY), but I am so delight I am considering this far enough in to rec the book to you all.

REEED EEET.

It's set in Roman Britain, and it's slashy, and mildly kinky (Esca is technically Marcus's slave. Sort of voluntarily. IT'S PRETTY GREAT. Although the power balance is probably not uneven enough to put off people who aren't into that sort of thing), and it's a children's book, so it makes for pretty quick reading.

I think this book might actually be where my interest in intensely dedicated male-male bonds originated. And possibly also my interest in voluntarily uneven power balances. And, um, possibly also my secret interest in puppyplay; not that there's any in the book, but there have been a couple of metaphorical comparisons and parallels between Marcus and Esca's whole master-slave-BBFs relationship and the whole dog-master-BBF dynamic, and I can see how I might have subconsciously picked up on that to some extent. (IDEK why I bothered to black that out. OH WELL. That is about how ~secret~ my secret fondness is.)

Of course, it's possible that a natural inclination towards those thing which I already had is the reason I liked the book as a kid, rather than vice verse, but either way, YAY, THIS BOOK! \o/

Also, while I was googling for Marcus/Esca fic, I just discovered that the book is being made into a film coming out sometime in 2011, and while I am wary of possible book ruination, and am also PRETTY FUCKING EXCITED for the possibility of there being a fandom. :D

In conclusion: DEAR GOD, SOMEONE PLEASE SQUEE ABOUT THIS WITH ME, BEFORE I START VIOLENTLY LENDING THIS BOOK TO PEOPLE (as soon as I'm done reading it myself).

new fandom time!, new ships of the day, rec:canon, the eagle of the ninth, old ships of the day (nostalgia!), pimping stuff out, movies, books, squee, how have i not already seen this?, omgomgomg, this is just incredibly gay
