The FBI building has been closed to tourists for over a decade now, and I doubt the tours will ever resume. Shame, since they were highly entertaining.

I recommend the Library of Congress (Jefferson Building) as an excellent place for interesting architectural photography. The monuments are always great to photograph, especially the lesser known ones like the Korean and WWII war memorials. Of the museums, I think Natural History and Air and Space offer the most picture taking opportunities.

And if you're sneaky, you can find the President's Book!

Thanks for the ideas. I'm leaning towards the Natural History museum, especially if I get a crappy weather day.

Guess it's a good thing I saw the FBI building as a kid. :)

Okay, this may happen Thursday after I get in.

I'm thinking something like, get in to Virginia, train to D.C., store my bag at Union Station and then hit the Spy Museum and then see what's around there for the rest of the afternoon.

Thanks for the suggestion. :)

Ummm... I'm going to be even more of a damper here, but... better check that you can store your bag at Union Station. (If you can't, store it at a local hotel. They're pretty cool about it.)

Please don't worry about being a damper! I'd MUCH rather know now so I can plan and make calls and be organized. I'd hate to get there with maps and plans and everything and THEN find out everything is FUBARed.

Please, please set me straight when I've got it wrong! :)

The Folger Shakespeare Library has a lovely gallery and is very close to the Supreme Court building (like 2 tiny blocks). Sometimes they have plays, too: http://www.folger.edu/

It's been a while since I was there, and frankly I didn't see all of what I wanted to, but we took one of those tours when we were there. Took us to the monuments, part of the Smithsonian (not the ONE part I wanted to see dangit), the White House, the Capitol Bldg, and I forget what else.

Frankly the only part of the Smithsonian worth seeing in my opinion is Air & Space and one day I'm going back to see it!

There's also the US Mint, which I did not see either, but I hear it's really awesome.

The White House, while nothing spectacular (cuz the tours barely touch on it, it's a big place) is worth going to. Who knows, you might catch a glimpse of Bo running across the lawn ;)

ETA: Library of Congress!!! (which I also didn't see) Our somewhat unofficial National Library! (obviously I didn't get enough sleep last night)

Have fun!!

Now that I've spoked all your travel plans, once you do get here, I can't recommend Smithsonian Natural History enough. The new evolution hall is spiffy and I think Written in Bone - the forensics exhibit (conveniently next to the Hope Diamond) is still up.

Air and Space is the next one to go to.

I should have had the sense to ask you to begin with. :)

And yeah, I was poking at the Natural History's site yesterday. :)
