No, he didn't know. It's not like this kind of thing happens every day, even in this nuthouse. And it stung a bit, the outright rejection when he was trying so hard-- even Yukimi could have his feelings hurt if you were enough of a jerk about it-- but he pushed it aside as best as he could. It went both ways. He'd have to try and keep a tight reign on negative emotions if Machi was going to feel them too. He wanted to retreat from this, mutter some kind of acknowledgement or apology and go busy himself with another tragic lover, but that'd be pointless. He started this to get a feel for what was happening, but also to try and get Machi on speaking terms again. The silence was just too uncomfortable.

"Okay..." He nodded slowly, trying to understand. "So tell me."

Machi was silent, his head bowed over the wrap of blankets in which he had ensconced himself, a thick and multidunious collection of layers. His mouth tightened slightly, jaw setting--frustration, or something like it, darker and sour, welled up behind his mind, and he pushed it back, fighting for words and something tangible, a sense of coherence or cooperation, enough to push past this and make himself receptive for a little while ( ... )

Yukimi understood. He wasn't really sure what to do with that answer, though. It was a relief to know that Machi didn't blame him for this-- not that he thought he could be blamed for this, except maybe in that he introduced the kid to Ace, but people didn't always make sense and considering how Machi had been treating him lately he wouldn't have been too shocked. But still...

"That's not what I asked, y'know. I mean, if you don't wanna talk about it I guess that's okay, but it might help us figure out... something... if I know what's going on." Machi definitely knew more about this than he did, but there was a fine line between getting to a mutual understanding and just invading Machi's privacy.

"--Woah, uh. You ok there?"

Machi coughed again, then shook his head--then nodded, realising that wasn't what he meant. "--fine," he managed, his voice a little strained, and he coughed another time before his throat cleared enough to talk. "I am fine." He made a final harsh noise in the back of his throat, tears budding in his eyes from the strain but hidden behind his sunglasses, where he knew better than to reach for them--as long as he didn't move for them, Yukimi wouldn't know they were there. "I..."

He stopped, trying to think of what to answer--he didn't know what Yukimi was asking, or how much he knew, except maybe nothing, and that was, at best, irritating. At worst it was utterly useless. Maybe it would be better to treat it as though he were simply ignorant and didn't know anything, even the obvious--at least then he couldn't be accused of leaving the man adrift when he did something stupid. When or if. "... do not die," he started, considering briefly a switch into Borginian, then abandoning it ( ... )

Fine? Yeah. Yukimi wasn't convinced. He took a moment to stand up and fetch the mug on the desk, giving Machi some space, just a second of him being not there and definitely not noticing the strain and distress. He poured the lemon tea from Machi's mug into his own-- the kid hadn't touched it, so why not?-- and refilled the mug with water from the pitcher. He sat back down and offered it to Machi. He wasn't going to say anything about it or the kid would probably reject him out of stubbornness, but he didn't like that cough.

"Well I try not to die anyway, but cool, thanks for the advice."

But the second part got his attention. He froze, staring at Machi for a few uncomfortable moments. The bond ran that deep, did it? That was... (unnatural, unwelcome, terrifying--) ...kind of weird. But that's okay. It didn't change anything, really. He didn't want to die and he didn't want Machi to die, and he already would've gone to great lengths to keep either from happening.

"Okay. Thanks for the head's up. Anything else I should know?"
