I found this sequence as the answer to a silly (not for publication) math question I asked.  It's kind of cool that it is almost arithmetic (except for the first term) and shares so many terms with the Davenport-Schinzel numbers.  I spent two hours today (and some time yesterday) solving it which is kind of silly since it's basic enough that I'm ( Read more... )

I find that to be the case with any task that I "have to do". Activity X may have been a cherished hobby for years, but the minute X gets labeled as "work", it suddenly becomes a "chore". It's part of the reason I'm glad I didn't go into engineering or the natural sciences for my living (though it also has the sting of unrealized potential, so pick your poison).
