Al!Miles wrote some great stories in their day, before it appears they just started treating the show like a cash cow.
Before they forgot who the show was supposed to be about.
I was actually of the probably small population that liked the twist of the ship's message telling Clark to "rule them with strength". But it's what they did to Clark afterwards that was unforgiveable until Seasons 8 and 9. What they SHOULD'VE done was have Clark fight against this destiny actively rather than have him hide on the farm for 3 whole seasons. And if they'd've just had someone explain that the AI got all of Jor-El's intelligence and none of his humanity, then that would've gone a long way to repair the situation. I personally was of two opinions about the AI: a) that option one I just gave and b) it was Brainiac that delivered that message. When they introduced Brainiac in Season 5, I thought for sure they would go this route, but alas it was not meant to be.

//Season 1 is probably my second favorite season of Smallville (after Season 9, of course) because both seasons we see the Hero come full circle in a way. In Season 1 Clark is just finding out that he's not even human, and in Season 9 Clark is learning to finally embrace both sides. In Season 1 Clark's main motive for helping people may be guilt in a sense, but he also has this sense of justice that has been ingrained in him by his parents. In Season 9, Clark has taken that guilt and instead makes his mission about duty, truth, and justice

And to answer your question “why more comics fans didn't watch the show?”- maybe people saw Smallville as another version of Superboy and they wanted to see a full-blown Superman show? Maybe they thought to themselves “hey, I’ve seen it before.”
This is why I usually try to actually experience something before I shoot it down. If I hadn't actually sat down and watched Buffy (I thought it was gonna be just as silly as the movie), I would've missed out on not only the show that got me through high school, but I would've missed Angel and never fell as in love with Cordelia as I did. Until Justice League and Smallville, those were my absolute favorite shows ever. I can still go back and watch episodes of Buffy/Angel and remember that they were the first fandoms I ever participated in.

I'm picturing the way Beeman describes how the wind got progressively...windier, lol, and that kind of subtle direction is actually pretty brilliant to me.
