Seems like you had a ball!
Lucky you ;^)
And yeah... you're right... SGU seemed doomed to crash and burn :^/

Total crash and burn. It's like I commented in another LJ; those who aren't Stargate fans will probably like SGU since it's leaving a lot of the baggage of the previous series behind and going off in its own direction, and thus it'll be easier for new viewers to get into it. But those of us who have been fans for a while will likely be disappointed and start tuning out. And when the core audience falls away, well... game over. :(

Weren't they trying to do the same with SGA?
Mostly a new cast, new setting, new adventures, no real ties to SG1?
Then in comes O'Neill, then in comes Woolsey, then gone is Liz and in comes Carter and later Woolsey again... oh and let's not forget the pleasant visits from Teal'c, Mitchel, Vala and Daniel. And the frequent calls from and to Landry.
I'm sure that once the SGU ratings start going down slightly (what nearly always happens after people loose their initial curiosity) tptb will find a way to drag in some of the most popular people from either SG1 or SGA.
I so want to bet everything I own on that...

Yes, they were totally trying to do the same thing with SGA. And they're already going to be having cameos from SG-1 characters scattered throughout SGU's first season. Which I guess proves that TPTW are totally incapable of learning from their past mistakes.

Sounds like you had a great time!

I am torn about SGU. The one trailer I've seen looked interesting, and something I loved about S1 of Atlantis was the whole "cut off from Earth and relying on ourselves to survive" aspect, which, from what I understand, is what Universe is all about.

But.

Past experiences with the SG universe have left most fans wanting, if not downright angry. And if they're out in the middle of freakin' nowhere, what are these rumours about Shanks guesting in a bunch of eps? How does that work? (And enough of bringing SG-1 characters into the other shows already.) Plus one of the PTB has declared that "no one is safe" so I'm afraid to get attached to any of the characters, and how can you get attached to a show with that hanging over your head?!

Uh, sorry for the rant. But really, glad you had such a wonderful time!

Oh, no, rant on! LOL. I know what you mean. I also really loved the 'cut off from Earth' part of the Atlantis story... yet, trying to do it again in Universe feels rather too close to Star Trek Voyager. At least Atlantis was stuck planetside for most of the series due to power supply issues, which helped distinguish it from Voyager's and Universe's 'ship lost in space' schtick.

The thing with Shanks appearing might have something to do with the virtual communication device they're going to find on the ship; supposedly that's going to give them some limited contact with Earth. And yeah, what the hell is up with 'no one is safe' thing? This isn't supposed to be 24. *snorts*

But yeah, I had a great time; the con was fun, going to and from it on the train was awesome... definitely looking forward to doing that next year. But I won't be getting a 4-day pass again, they've gotten too expensive; the pre-reg price offered during the con was $100 (which means the full price when online registration is opened will likely be even more). O_o
