Just because I'm not scared doesn't mean I like them very much.

It's been almost three weeks since my last update. I've just not gotten around to it. I haven't said a word about my wonderfully chilled out weekend in Manchester for saintmaryuk's birthday, the disgraceful federal and government response to the disaster in New Orleans or the summoning powers of tea, and right now I should probably be writing up djelibeybi_meg's wedding, ( Read more... )

And I wasn't holding anything extremely heavy over my head at the time... I must confess the thought, "at least I'm not Hunter" did cross my mind. :-)

I had a not-dissimilar experience last year, when an attempt to dislodge a spider of considerable size from a position high on a wall reminded me of the valuable lesson that the little bastards can jump quite a long way. This makes sense - after all, they're not entirely reliant on strong breezes when constructing webs - but I'd never thought in terms of them actually leaping at me. The accursed arachnid's alighting upon my sleeve was the cue for a great deal of arm waving on my part, after which I couldn't see it. Anywhere.

After a brief survey of the room, I had an uncomfortable thought and looked in the mirror to see the beastie just cresting my shirt collar and about to embark on a voyage up the back of my head.

Given that I am arachnophobic where any specimen spanning more than about 20mm is concerned, I'm quite proud to report that it was eventually released unharmed. But not until a good deal more limb-flailing occurred...

You know, that reminds me of the scene in Red Dwarf (Polymorph) where the snake leaps onto Lister face (or alternatively, in the second Red Dwarf book, where it's a rat rather than a snake)
Urrggghhh...flying spiders...eep!

I came home, uploaded my pictures and wrote up the wedding. I is a Good Girl. :)

Re large bodied spiders - it does make a big difference knowing that spiders here are non venomous. Its a bit weird having a large spider walk over you but doesn't have the 'ohshitwhichoneisit' effect that it can in other climates where I've routinely shaken out my shoes for scorpions or spiders and checked the loo seat!
