Watching I was shocked by how much I liked the pilot of NBC's new crime drama Hannibal, which was beautifully scripted, acted, and shot. ( some spoilers for the pilot )
Now I don't feel so bad about being unable to make out Mads' line in that scene at all until I saw gifsets on Tumblr. It's strange; I've seen him in a bunch of movies and I've never really had a problem understanding him. I think he speaks more low than usual? And Bryan Fuller's dialogue tends to be more of a mouthful (see: Pushing Daisies).
I found him difficult to understand on two occasions: for that line about the mongoose, and when he was giving his psychoanalysis of Will. I think the literary flavour to the dialogue does make it harder to understand (predict, guess) what Hannibal is saying. I mean, "No forts in the bone arena of your skull for things you love" is not a sentence you hear every day.
I've never been wholly impressed by Hugh Dancy before, so I was most surprised by how his portrayal won me over immediately. He doesn't come off as crazy; he just comes off as a mess, and you can understand how he can inspired both ferocious need to protect (Alona) and a desire to see just how far he can be pushed before he goes splattt.
>Although who is the Blue Hands in this AU? Crawford/the FBI, or Hannibal Lector? I would guess that, either we haven't met the Hands Of Blue yet...or its one of the others (besides Lecter) that Crawford has asked to keep an eye on Will.

River of Stars is definately on my to-read list.
