I'm rereading on my iPad Rafael Sabatini's "The Life of Cesare Borgia", for the first time since I was 14; Sabatini and Machiavelli, both big admirers of the Borgias, were my earliest exposure to the infamous family. Is it any wonder that I remain transfixed by them as I do?

I really need to read more about them. I am utterly entranced with Cesare on The Borgias and although that's partially the actor, I am loving the character as well. He is such an intriguing mix of innocence and worldliness, honor and cynicism.

The Borgias have been slandered so frequently throughout history, but there's been some contemporary histories and biographies (particularly of Lucrezia) that are less sensationalist - and probably more accurate. Sabatini, whilst not a historian, was at least not a subscriber to the widely held belief that they were the most immoral and evil people who ever lived.
