Kvothe is still taking care of Bast's injuries, and providing a barrier between him and anyone else that Bast wouldn't want to see, but he still has to step out on occasion for food and things like that. He's quiet and keeping to himself, but he can still be caught in the hallway, if someone is looking.

Bast is getting progressively more worried about his Reshi. He doesn't like the silences, doesn't like the way the lute seems to have disappeared to where he can't see it at all, and doesn't like, again, how quiet he is. He was getting his Reshi back. And now it feels as though he's lost him again. And that he doesn't want.

He's just not sure what to do about it.

Kvothe sees the way Bast has been watching him, and he doesn't like it though he doesn't know what to do about it. Even when he does speak his voice is quiet. "What is it, Bast?"

He's trying to figure out how to bring it up.

Bast gives up on subtlety. "You've changed."

"What?" He laughs, a little, but Bast can probably see it as him retreating behind the innkeeper mask, just a little. "I don't know, it sounds more like you might still need a bit more rest." It would be more convincing were he able to really meet Bast's eyes.

Merlin is looking. Kvothe may not be in his realm of vision, but there are other ways to know and too see, and he is fully aware of what has come to pass.

He is in fact waiting outside the door, one after noon, and falls in step silently next to his friend.

Kvothe is silent for a while as they walk, not in any hurry to speak, though he will eventually break the silence. "Hello, Merlin."

"Kvothe." He remains silent, a moment. "I am sorry."

About the whole thing, really.
