I can't really explain why the fuck I decided I needed to do this, but it's too late to back out now. We could've spent the day just like any other, the five of us plus two extra, and maybe the girls wouldn't have noticed. But it seems more and more important every day, in ways I can't really put into words, to make the best of the time we've got ( Read more... )

Sam wasn't sure how he had gotten there either, but hadn't stopped to wonder that yet. Not talented in the culinary arts, he'd shown up early to help push things around and set the table. Still not sleeping much, but a little better than before, he had taken to the activity happily. Anything to keep busy. He even put on a nicer shirt this morning and his jeans looked almost new ( ... )

"Yeah, I know. It's kinda crazy, seein' every body all packed in at once," I admit with a cough of laughter, letting Mack go when she lets out a frustrated whine, her arms literally pinwheeling like she thinks it'll give her the momentum to escape. She stumbles forward, her chin trembling with oncoming tears that I know aren't real, and I shake my head and mutter, "Uh uh, don't start."

She stares me down for a handful of seconds, then stomps off to find someone else to get sympathy from. Or someone to give her cake. Whichever happens first.

"I'm uh... I'm glad you came. I know this isn't exactly your scene or whatever."

"Well, thanks for inviting me," Sam offered in return. Parties never really appealed to him, but he usually managed to get his shit together long enough to attend, if a friend asked him. And, even if he couldn't have imagined it a year ago, Neil was now Sam's friend.

"Figured I wouldn't hear the end of it if I made up some lame excuse," he joked.

"Hopefully you're not sufferin' too much," I mutter dryly, sliding onto the stool next to him with a smirk.

"The girls are having fun. That was kinda the whole point, anyway. Or, most of it."

"I've suffered worse," Sam assured him and forcibly did not think about how that was true.

"Most of it?" he prompted, genuinely a bit curious. "It's not fun for you guys too?"

"No, it is. I mean, Tom's really into this kind of shit, and... I dunno, it feels good havin' everybody here," I say, and I guess that's not too terrible of an admission.

Despite his general awkwardness with the situation, Sam did concede with a shrug. "I guess it is for the best. To have everybody around while we have everybody." Before the next disappearance. Sam wouldn't admit it just then, but he missed not having Cas around, Bobby, his dad. But at leas there were familiar faces.

"What's going to happen to me if I steal a sip of that beer?" Jess asked, leaning against the bar next to him and giving him an ingratiating smile. "Will I be safe, or will I be sorry?"

He looked at her and was unable to hide his own amused smile at her look. "You'd probably be safer getting your own," he pointed out. "But I think you've got good odds of surviving anyway."

"Hm," she said, like she was actually taking the time to weigh her options. "Maybe I'll save the stealing part of the evening until you've had at least one more. And maybe a good meal, too. If nothing else, it'll dull your reflexes."

"You wish," he chuckled. "I'm actually kind of hurt you think two beers and a meal is enough to slow me down. Thanks, Jess."

"All I need's one little opening and I'm all over it," she said. "Of course, it would require me to not eat enough Thanksgiving dinner to feed a horse and I'm just not sure that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make. I might have to use my powers of persuasion instead."

"You work here," he pointed out with a laugh. "Your powers of persuasion are not stronger than the power of reason. Get your own, greedy."

"I don't work here right now," she protested, but she knew a losing battle when she saw one. And it was two seconds of work to get her own drink. But it was the principle of the thing. "Just wait a couple of hours, then my powers of persuasion will be a lot more convincing."
