It wouldn't be a surprise to anyone to find that Jack had fallen for a girl. It wouldn't be a surprise to find he'd fallen for anyone, if a person knew him well enough. Blondes were a weak spot, but so were brunettes and gingers. Tall, short, curvy, thin, male, female, and that was excluding the majority of the beings in the galaxy...

"Oh, hullo." Out for a walk Harry came across what looked, from a distance, like a man with a small ball of white fluff. It was only when he came closer that he realised the ball of fluff was actually a puppy. "That's a very small puppy," he pointed out, hunching down so he didn't loom over it.

"Hi, Harry," Jack said warmly. "Isn't she cute? She's mine. Or she will be, when she's old enough to leave her mother."

"Er," Harry said, slightly unnerved at being called by name by someone he didn't really know. Although Harry had seen him around, so maybe he had picked it up from somewhere. "She is cute," he agreed, putting a hand out to stroke her. "What are you going to call her?"

"No clue yet," he shrugged. "I'm sure everyone's going to have a suggestion, but I think I'll know once I get her home. That's what happened with my cat."

Linus wasn't close enough to know what it was, but the large golden retriever was pretty sure he wanted it. The puppy was tiny, not even old enough to leave it's mother, and Logan grabbed Linus' collar and hauled him back with a sternly spoken command.

Sulking, Linus flopped down onto his belly, shuffling just a little closer and then resting his head on his paws as he watched the pup with obvious curiosity.

"I don't think he's worked out it's a dog yet, Logan said, moving to sit beside Jack and leaning lightly against him.

Jack leaned back in return and gave Logan a small smile. "I'm sure he'll figure it out before too long. I hope he doesn't step on her or something. He's a lot bigger than she is."

Stepping didn't seem to be the problem. Sniffing her to death, maybe...

Linus wiggled a little closer, looking at Logan and Jack before getting bold and nudging the ball of fluff with his nose.

The pup yipped pathetically, and Linus jumped back, clearly spooked. It only lasted a moment though, and eventually he was sniffing again, nudging it gently and then resting one heavy paw on it, in an attempt to prove his dominance over it.

The pup yipped again and wiggled it's way free, only to start climbing up the older dog.

"I think she'll be fine," Logan replied with a snort, laughing as Linus flopped onto his side, letting the young pup pounce and nip at him.

"Yeah, she's gonna have him whipped before she's even old enough to come home with me," he chuckled. Watching the two of them made him smile and he leaned a little heavier against Logan.

"How did you sleep? You looked okay when I got dressed and left."

Finding a puppy missing when she went to visit them was a traumatic thing for River. At first she thought the missing one might have got herself stuck somewhere, but when she didn't turn up right away, River's imagination started to supply all kinds of horrible possibilities.

Clearly, she'd been puppynapped and someone was going to do horrible things to her while training her to be a bad dog. The more she thought about it, the more upset River got. She was trying to decide whether she ought to go to Mal or the IPD to mount a search and rescue mission (The IPD had more manpower and resources, but Mal wouldn't waste time laughing at her for being so worked up over a missing puppy.) when she heard Simon Chicago bark.

She rushed to see what he'd found, and when it turned out to be the puppy, perfectly fine and safe and attacking a blade of grass, River's relief was enough to bring tears to her eyes. "There you are," she said, scooping up the puppy for a little snuggle. "I wonder if we can teach them to leave a note," she said to

"Or maybe I could," he chuckled. "I just brought her out to play with her a little. So she'll know me. How are you doing, River?"

"I should have guessed that might be a possibility, instead of just leaping to the worst conclusions." River kissed the puppy on her head and set her back down in the grass. "I think my stomach is bigger every minute and my feet hurt, but I'm told that's to be expected." She decided that sitting down would be worth the risk of not being able to get get up again and lowered herself to the ground beside Simon Chicago. "How are you, besides enjoying the puppy?"

"I'm...fine," Jack lied, thought not very convincingly. "I'm glad the latest bit of island mischief is done. I could have been happy being spared this time. You and Mal get out of it this time?"

Charlie had been painting and there's a long strip of bare thigh on show as she walks out of the house adjusting the knot in her sarong and wiping her hands on a rag. She stands in the shade of the house for a moment and watches Jack and the puppy.

"Young love, huh?" she teases, gently.

"She's great, isn't she?" he asked as he held a stick that the pup gnawed on a bit and then lost interest in. "I just thought I'd come play with her for a while."

"Yeah, she is. I'm keepin' her little brother, Ianto tell you that?"

She settles down on the grass next to them, keeping her sarong tucked in around her legs. She knows that Jack treats her like a sister, which doesn't mean she's gotta flash him willy-nilly.

"You name her yet?"

"Yeah. I think I'm going to call her Sugar," he said, wearing a silly sort of grin. It wasn't like he'd admit to just anyone he was charmed by her, especially not after the fuss he'd made trying to tell Ianto no.

"It's not like she answers to it yet, though. What are you calling yours?"

"I really hope that's not a rat," Owen said, when he happened up on Jack and the small furry creature that he seemed to be busying himself with. Sometimes, it seemed as if he was the only person on the island who hadn't attached himself to some sort of small creature.

"With you around, I hope it isn't, either," Jack teased. "I heard about how you treat rats."

It took Owen almost a full two seconds to realize what Jack had even been talking about.

"That was an experiment," He explained, sounding a bit exasperated, "People might've died if I hadn't done that."

Jack only beamed at him, far too pleased with himself for making Owen even that put out.

"I know, I know. It was actually really kind of innovative. Still...no jamming my dog."
