Several bloggers had posted entries comparing Snape's love for Lily to Dante's for Beatrice. So I went back and skimmed the Vita Nuova and Commedia and came up with the following. (Quotes are from John Sinclair's translation

Glad you enjoyed: Dante is worth a read even if you're not a Snape fan. I could wish Dumbledore had been a better Virgil, though.

Thank you for making that so clear. I've read many stories where Snape is reading or quoting Dante and always thought it Cliche and morose because it happens so often but now I can see why.
