I want my MTV; or Money for Fanfic

May 01, 2007 05:47

So in some discussions that have been happening on my flist and in other places, the idea has been put forward that money in exchange for fanfic wouldn’t necessarily be a bad, evil, immoral, wrong thing.

Some of the people I was discussing this with were unaware of the fact that Rockfic, for example, exists. There's an archive that charges a truly minimal fee--seriously I don't think there's much of a profit to be made at $2 a year--and there's also a Rockfic Press that sells both novels and short story anthologies. If you go through the blurbs for the books, you'll see a lot of fanfic conventions represented.

So what if, say, someone put together an archive/press called Actorfic? What if there was a test case tomorrow and the final judgment was that FPF could legally be sold? What if people decided to start charging for FPF regardless of legality? What about people who file the names and serial numbers off their fanfic and sell it as original fic?

Where do we stand on money and fanfic?

Out of sheer curiosity, I thought I'd post a poll and ask.

When I say "money for fanfic" here I mean the writer/publisher seeing some kind of profit, unlike 'zines which a traditionally assumed to be sold for materials cost only and whose contributors are paid, if at all, by receiving a free copy.

ETA: Please note, when I talk about money for fanfic, there are any number of models for payment besides selling printed copies. It could be a fee for membership to an archive, money for an e-book or a pdf copy of the fic, ads on archives, requests for donations and probably other ways no one's mentioned yet.

Poll maybe get a blister on your little finger

Thanks for taking the poll and please pimp it to your flists if you're so inclined.

if you don't know what I'm talking about in the bonus question, you really need to check out David's rap.
