No for the ump-teenth time

I had a job as a telemarketer during my freshman year in college. I lasted two days. They had us sitting at cubicles with these awkward headsets in front of the computer screen with our script asking recent graduates to donate to Syracuse University when they were already thousands of dollars in debt. It was not very good for the self esteem and I thought the whole thing was just pretty shitty...To this day, I have to listen to those telemarketers all the way through to the end of their script...That's a whole lot of No's that I have to rattle back at them...What I really should tell them is that there has got to be some better job out there for them...

Yes, I feel very guilty when I get the phone calls because I know that they are only doing their job, shitty as it is.

I wish I could give money to everyone who asks...

my college had teams from each dorm call alumni asking for money each year. the dorm that won got something like a pizza party or some other piddly thing. my favourite lines were, "i'm still paying off my student loans" and "i only went there a semester."

of course, this is the college that had a fund for having flowers planted around campus year-round (yes, even in winter).
