Bon Mots Of Readercon

Jul 09, 2007 11:52

These are things said at Readercon which made me happy.  In the interest of general confusion, I have decided not to identify any of the speakers.  Please comment here if you would like to own up to any of these lines, or if you feel your mot was actually more bon than I've remembered.  In the interest of LJ tact, one name has been paraphrased but ( Read more... )

"Then he told me that when the nuts and papyas get ripe and fall into the Amazon, the piranhas rise to the surface and turn it all into a smoothie."

I should point out the information about nuts and piranhas was not hearsay; it's from David Quammen's collection of nature essays The Flight of the Iguana (1988).

But the voice on the phone is brilliant.

I also recommend highly The Boilerplate Rhino (2001). It has an essay about Alan Turing and cellular slime mold, for which I bought the book (I have studied Dictyostelium discoideum and Turing fascinates me) and another you should probably read about nutmeg and the Dutch East India Company. David Quammen is magnificent.

Awww... I'm pretty sure you would have liked the panel on Angela Carter, and the Bad Prose Contest. Of which more anon.

This is very reminiscent of the classic Devniads, where Bob Devney would grab some of the best quotes from any given convention and bundle them up like this.

Well, since I introduced our dear teeny to the brother of Bob Devney, who explained what his brother had been up to at Readercons past, I suspect that may have been the remote origin of this amusing post. And unlike Bob D., I didn't see any little keyboard or tape recorder in evidence, so I must commend teeny upon her not-so-teeny memory. Mine doesn't work so well any more, though at least I remember the approximate utterance of most of the bon mots.

My influence (dear godzilla, do I feel pompous saying that) was Dave Langford--I've been catching up on back issues of Ansible lately.

First prize is a John Norman novel . . . second prize is an autographed John Norman novel.
