Out of the Water
The water was mind-numbingly cold.
"I have to get out!"
If he stayed for another second, surely he would drown.
"I need air!"
But these hands, they pulled him back from the surface repeatedly. Stay here, they sang insistently. You're one of us, stay here.
The more ferociously he swam, the harder they hung on. The path to fresh air and freedom was quickly slipping from his grasp. He was going to drown in this watery grave.
"I don't want to die!"
---
Suddenly, there was a hand pulling him up, out of the water and into the shockingly cold and refreshing air. He took a huge breath he hadn't realized he was missing and when his vision cleared, he was staring into the eyes of a curious Cooro.
"Are you alright, Husky?"
Husky quickly removed his presence between Cooro's arms, taking a good look at his surroundings. Contrary to his less-than-pleasant dream, the night was peaceful and quiet, save the merry crackling of the fire. Senri and Nana were a little distance away, sleeping beside each other- all in all, a scene of tranquility. And they were nowhere near water.
Cooro, who'd been very patient this entire time, finally lost that patience. "Husky," he prodded, "What's the matter?"
"It's nothing." Too quickly.
"Husky!" It was leaning heavily toward a whine now. "You're not okay! You were crying and shaking real bad. You're not-"
"I said I'm fine!" There was an edge to his voice now that warned off further questioning.
A pout. "Fine," said Cooro sulkily. "It's your turn to watch anyway."
The shuffling of Cooro's wings slowly died away as he settled himself beside Senri, curling into a ball in preparation for his own dreaming. His would be pleasant, no doubt.
This was ridiculous. He was a flipping MERMAN. He shouldn't be plagued with hydrophobia. It wasn't true hydrophobia to the point where he couldn't even venture near water (he'd have to, he's a FISH), but psychologically, he was terrified. One day, his dream could become a reality and there'd be no one to lift him up and pull him out, no one.
Suddenly, something warm snaked their way around his (NOT girlish) sides and pulled him close against an even warmer body. For one, sweet, delicious moment, Husky savored the sensation. When his sanity returned, though, so did his indignation. "What are you doing- get OFF!"
Cooro took that fine opportunity to display his excellent talent of ignoring anything Husky had to say. "You look sad." Said Cooro, "When someone's sad, you hug them to make 'em feel better."
"I'm not sad."
"Be quiet Husky."
Husky was quiet.
