Yeah, I don't get Linux either. That's why I just stick with Linus.

WHY?

I don't know. It just doesn't want to work for me. I get a goofy prompt that doesn't mean anything. It's supposed to be idiot-proof, but they didn't count on me.

I'm tempted to try it but I'm afeared of breaking it.

I haven't broken anything yet, but my system was already pretty broken when I started. I haven't even got to the point where I can break anything!

What linux are you using? Most distributions boot into a GUI these days so you don't see a command prompt.

Remember how I was saying earlier that my home PC is dead? Well, I bought one off eBay for a few bucks. It didn't include an OS, so I thought I would give Linux a try. I got a PCLinuxOS CD. After it loads, it asks me for a login and password. I type "root" for both, like the instructions say. Then I get a command prompt. Ok, now what? I have no more instructions. I imagine there is a GUI somewhere in there, but I can't get to it.

One possible problem is that this PCLinuxOS is kind of big, and my machine probably doesn't have the capacity to load it properly. I should have started with a smaller OS, but this one had quite a few programs that I thought could be useful.

Also, I'm booting it as a "live CD" on my machine that was dead. I haven't got the new PC yet. I don't want to actually install Linux on the dead machine, because a) the hard drive is 99% full (and I have already deleted everything I possibly can) and b) I can still get to a few files on it so it's still somewhat useful, as an archive if nothing else. I plan to keep it alive just long enough to make sure that I can transfer everything to the new machine, assuming I can ever get it up and running.

Knoppix is the best of the bunch. It has a GUI (KDE) and should work fine for you.
