Cocktails and Domains

Through a magically coincidental string of events I have fallen in with a group of LA's bartenders who are... for lack of a better term elite within the area. I'm not quite sure how that happened, but it's been extremely interesting and I'm excited about something for the first time a while. Basically their goal is to bring LA's cocktail scene up

that's something I want to get started with my friends/sis around here too, but was thinking more along the lines of mixology, where we get together at a house and everyone gets one ingredient and then we make three different mixed drinks.

Since lots of people don't really have homes here (much less well stocked bars or equipment), it makes that hard. I think some night will just end up being at my place instead of at a bar.

My old roommate Burke and I used to do that on a regular basis. I still do something similar periodically at my house, except it shows up as themes during a cocktail party. Usually I'll pick one major constituent alcohol and do compare/contrast tastings using the pure spirit and various cocktails based on that spirit. For instance, the last time I did so, we had 4 different gins, and did a straight up compare tasting, then gin martinis, then gin bears, and finally jasmines. If there's still sobriety left, that's when we start looking through my library of bar books to look for something interesting.

It should be said, however, that I have a pretty damn extensive bar, so that approach might not be viable if you don't have a well stocked bar to begin with.
