“She is a dear, this lady of yours,” Jane smiles over the maps of Portugal, “She has invited me over again and, I swear, if this keeps up I will see more of Kitty than you do.”

Wellington gives her a peculiar look then, and it is odd, considering Jane has rarely known him to hesitate. He looks over her shoulder, staring a little too intently at the table before them.

“Damn if I know the proper way of getting about this,” he mutters.

“You could possibly have supper together, at least.”

“I mean to Portugal,” he frowns.

Jane sighs.

Perscitia’s first battle had been her last one. Her captain-she did not like to think of his name anymore-had slumped against her, looking miserable and wet and every right angry. The smell of rain, now, would always bring to her the vision of him walking away.

“Dearest,” her captain tried, but she shook her head, claws furrowing the wet earth as if to anchor her down from the sky where the staccato shots of rifles sounded over the fall of heavy rain.

“No, I cannot,” she said, and fiercely amended, no matter how he shouted, “I will not.”
