Cant they accept that the people who like the romance already truly believe it’s the greatest thing since Anthony and Cleopatra (or Lancelot and Guinevere :P) and they can see massive romantic chemistry in a forehead peck; the rest of us see a donkey on a motorbike
Many LOLs!
Also I am so with you on the whole Merlin/Arthur dynamic. I had exactly the same thoughts about the lack of joy in Merlin this season. He's lost all his mirth (he knows not wherefore) and the joy of what made Merlin Merlin is slowly slipping away. If bloody Dragoon is a represenation of Merlin as an old man then I'd say the writers missed a beat. I dislike Dragoon but he does have an incorrigable sense of cheeky fun, like the Merlin we know of old. But the Merlin we see at the moment is cheerless and boring and going grow into a dour old sod!
I knnoooooowwww :( It was just a seriously weird episode all round - Gwen's motivation at the end - totally back to front; Arthur's weird behaviour (he took the news Gwen was missing in the tight-jawed, stoic, 'oh well' way Arsenal supporters take the latest results. "We ride at dawn," didnt seem that urgent somehow. And yeah - I cant work out the M/A in this episode at all. The words they said were fine I suppose - it was the weird almost detached formality of the delivery- but then the whole episode felt like that - like no one could really be arsed trying to act a plot that stupid. The promise was... what was that? Arthur accepted it without a sneer but are we k=meant to believe he set any store on it? Why would he? Maybe we were just meant to think Arthur was accepting Merlin's comfort. maybe its because they never really got much of a chance to talk about anything much- the episode wasnt about them and was all the weaker for that

It is, isn't it? I loved how this reviewer was all like: "well, no magic reveal this time either, FAIL" LOL. It's good to know there are logical people out there

Whoops! 4.09 has clearly carved itself on my psyche and not in a good way. :I cant edit so I MEANT 5.09. PEOPLE! :p
Thats an interesting theory actually - it was an Overcompensation episode so they held back the racehorse.
Your boyfriend was right - no humour and little A/M and we see what we get. Maybe Gwen and Morgana just cant carry an episode unless you really are an extreme fan?
Did they say Elyan was dying at Coldcon? I didnt know until he began with the guilt-trip and after that - well Queen Mab was shoved in just to make sure there weren't any actual genuine plot surprises because we don't want any of those do we? She was like... one of those people who ruin movies you've never seen before by announcing 'they all die at the end' just after the opening titles.
I wasn't going to watch the episode this week, but then some fans were saying they'd actually enjoyed it and that it wasn't all that A/G-heavy, so I gave it a go. And IDK, it was just kinda meh. Boring, like you said. Neither of the storylines (Gwen/Morgana or Arthur/Merlin/knights) kept my attention. My mind wandered multiple times.
I was surprised by but loved the line, "Arthur never tells me anything,” because - True Fact, honey! I KNOW. WHAT WAS THAT? I still don't get what the writers were going for there. They keep telling us over and over again how she's his closest confidante, the one he trusts and loves more than anyone else, so WTF was up with that line? I sincerely doubt it was meant to suggest that Gwen is onto Arthur and realizes that he says shit like that, but then heads off to lasso Merlin and engage in shenanigans behind her back. It was like they wanted to insert another joke there, but randomly landed on something that's actually true in canon, so instead of it being funny, it kinda made me feel sorry

Hey there:) It iS weird isnt it? The fantastic Bluebeeangel wrote a brilliant Spoof Reunion on the previous eps discussion which was only JUST exaggerated - its seriously worth a look. Its so so spot on

I am really baffled at Howard's writing (a little off topic, sorry). He is the creator of Misfits which is totally different and that its actually well written and allows for character development. I just don't know what to make of it. Does he not care anymore? Is he mocking it in a way?
Poor Arthur. Everytime Arthur or Merlin express anger/frustration I'm more thinking of the frustration Bradley and Colin (and the others) are likely feeling (and venting) at how shit the writing has gotten.
Oh I know! It must have been incredibly frustrating for all of them - they know their characters and Im sure they love them. They must have been thinking 'THIS is how they want the show to go out?'
Every time Ive seen Howard's name theres always gushing from the Net reviewers (fanboys and girls presumably) who seemed to think that because he wrote Misfits he could do no wrong. And yet he's terrible at Merlin - he doesn't get them at all IMO especially not Arthur - and he's an embarrassingly fluffy little girl at heart when it comes to the Disney Romance. Thankfully in that case they edited him heavily :P
What you said about no one caring about what happened to Morgana or the Dark Tower and how that means the episode was able to make its intended point - could not be more true, or sad.
There really was no respect shown to the audience at all in this episode. They didnt even try to round it off or explain why things had happened (ie Gwen's conversion). It was as if they just shovelled it out there with the attitude that people would accept and lionise anything they put out there. And looking at some reviews - that really does seem to be true
