Exploring the Mysteries Behind the Door.” И не удивительно- ведь здания в большинстве своем- старинные, ну не может в них не быть привидений!
В этом году я посетила:
Cedar Ridge Creative Centre
( Оставлю краткое описание по-английски и когда-нибудь переведу .)
Originally known as Uplands, this was the summer home for the Charles C. Cummings family. Built in the Arts and Crafts style, the 14 room, 5,000 sq. ft. mansion was completed in 1912-1913. In addition to the Main House, there is a Gardiner's Cottage and a Stable with attached Chauffeur's Cottage, now known as the Carriage House Studios. In 1927, the house was purchased by John Fraser, a Toronto financier who greatly enhanced the surrounding gardens. The property was featured in a 1942 edition of Canadian Home and Gardens magazine. In 1978, Cedar Ridge was acquired by the City of Toronto and has operated as an arts centre and gallery since. It is now a vibrant cultural hub offering a variety of arts programming for all ages and features a diverse roster of exhibitions in the gallery from September to June.
Visitors are invited to step inside the delightful Mansion, Carriage House, Gardiner's Cottage and experience the unique creative atmosphere. The Mansion's original character is maintained in the gallery space, which features an evolving exhibition of diverse and unique pieces lead by the Community Arts Guild, who create art with the residents of East Scarborough: connecting people diverse in language, income, age, culture and ability. Browse through the studios and enjoy the lush gardens and scenic walking trails overlooking the Scarborough Golf and Country Club. Cedar Ridge Creative Centre and Cedar Ridge Studio Gallery will be on hand to provide information on the house and gardens.
Johnson Chou Inc.
A modern design site in the heart of a traditional neighbourhood, the alternating white and black stucco clad buildings on Woodbine Avenue house the architectural and interior design studio of Johnson Chou Inc. The firm’s work is characterized by conceptual explorations of narrative, transformation and multiplicity. Their goal is to create drama in architecture that engages on intellectual, emotional and physiological levels of experience. The buildings are an illustration of their design philosophy, an exercise in the ‘less is more’ approach. The interiors continue the minimal and modern exterior esthetic, playing with the notions of space and light.
A unique opportunity to explore for the first time one of the three modern buildings that house the interdisciplinary design studio of Johnson Chou Inc.
Fool's Paradise
Fool’s Paradise is the former residence of well-known Canadian artist Doris McCarthy, best known for her landscape paintings. McCarthy bought the picturesque 12-acre property on the Scarborough Bluffs in 1939. Her mother viewed the purchase as an extravagance, referring to it as "that fool's paradise of yours." The name Fool's Paradise stuck and eventually the property became McCarthy’s full-time home and studio space. Doris McCarthy was elected the first female President of the Ontario Society of Artists and has taught some of Canada's most distinguished creative people. As a key figure in this country's artistic community, McCarthy experimented with and contributed to major art developments throughout the 20th century. This eccentric home, built by McCarthy over her lifetime, was donated to the Ontario Heritage Trust in 1998. Visitors will take part in guided tours lead by the Ontario Heritage Trust staff and will learn about Doris McCarthy’s experience building Fool’s Paradise as well as related aspects of her artistic career. Tours take guests through the interior of McCarthy’s house and studio and end with an opportunity to explore the property’s beautiful grounds, including gardens, a large pond and views of the Scarborough Bluffs. Original Architect: Forest Telfer/Doris McCarthy.
