I'm so disappointed

On the sign advertising that the dollhouse place needed a builder, they neglected to mention that this would involve a lot of carrying 40-to-70 lb boxes up and down stairs. The owner also neglected to mention that during the interview ( Read more... )

the dollhouse hates me, work, sad

It was a matter where after carrying a few loads downstairs, I was seeing spots and so light-headed I was afraid I might pass out. As long as I can pace myself (and I told her this) - for example, bring a few loads downstairs, then sit down and complete a shipping order, then bring a few loads downstairs, etc - I'd be okay. But I don't have the strength or stamina to carry load after load after load after load of boxes that are more than half my own body weight up and down stairs. Unfortunately it sounds like on delivery days, that's pretty much all you're doing, because you have to unload the truck as fast as possible. So pacing myself is not a possibility. It's a straight-up strength/stamina issue, and I don't have either the strength or stamina ( ... )

Hopefully she'll take my advice and add it to their ad so that nobody else runs into this particular issue. :/

I am so sorry. And a big middle finger to the employer for (a) not mentioning the physical needs of the job and (b) not realizing that after you've had some time to acclimate and re-use some muscles you haven't had to use for awhile, you would probably be able to lift and haul just fine. I know when I started working overnight stock at Wal-Mart, I had to huff and puff and rest a lot at first, and I moved so much more slowly than everyone - I thought I'd get fired. 3 months later, I was forty pounds lighter and hauling and stocking and moving at the same speed as everyone else.

Sorry this one didn't work out. They are dicks. Seriously.

I do think that I could get up to speed, and I told the woman I'd be replacing that I was fine with starting to lift weights or something to speed the process. But yeah, with them getting into their busy season now (leading up to Xmas) and the fact that there's only 5-7 workers in the store, the owner felt that she needed someone who could be proficient from the beginning.

I'm really unimpressed that this wasn't mentioned in the ad, in the interview, or when I was discussing the job with the rest of the staff (before I applied) and I asked what was involved; I was told it was mostly building, some shipping, and possibly a bit of customer service. Nobody mentioned anything about unloading trucks, carrying heavy boxes up and down stairs constantly, etc.

I'm just so frustrated and disappointed and angry. I wouldn't have applied to begin with if this had been listed. Now I've spent roughly $120 on making the dollhouse, and about 40 hours of work detailing it, and 3 hours of unpaid labor today helping with shipping and such... for ( ... )

I probably could, but she did mention that during their busy season she might be able to hire me two days a week just to do shipping. It isn't worth the hassle to get the $30, and possibly screw myself out of some relatively easy very-part-time work during the holidays. :/

That fucking sucks. I am so sorry. Did you get paid for these shadowing days? If not they were taking advantage of you!

Nope. She did say that she might hire me a couple days a week during the busy season, just to do shipping stuff. It doesn't seem worth it to fight for $30 and definitely lose out on any chance of part-time work.

God I'm so so disappointed and angry for you, I can only imagine how much worse you're feeling. I really really hope this will at least pan out into some part time work for you so that you get SOMETHING good out of it.

It was definitely a big ol' pile of 70-lb fail. :(
