The rule can be repealed with a simple majority vote that can be started by anyone, I believe.

The problem is that requires Republicans to defect, which would effectively end their careers. Once again, politics gets in the way of doing the right thing.

But hey, given how all these polls are coming out, if this trend continues then being an Independent might give them a better shot than being a Republican.
