The coloured-threads-and-knots record looked simple. Everyone assumed the most obvious interpretation was the correct one--the idea of encoding two--or three--sets of information in the same record was absurd.
Then someone took another look, paused, and started writing down everything they could see in the record.
The first set was a record or cattle trades and breeding, notes as to which animals died in winter or to predators. The second set was a children's story, singing of fire and the sun.
The third said The Bone Witch's name was Carole leRoux.
