Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn died today. And I feel... nothing, I think. I used to admire him long ago, during Perestroika, when I read about his fight during Soviet times. But then... too many things happened. I cried when Yeltsin died - it was the end of an era, of our hopes, of my youth, maybe. But Solzhenitsyn's era ended long ago.

He was so much his own person--he didn't fit into anyone's conception of what he should be. I agree with you; his era ended long ago.

It's tempting to say it is a sad thing to outlive your era, but I don't think it was sad for him - he did what he wanted to do, more or less, till the end.
