4/5 of my journal is friends only too! i know what a good googler i am, so i suppose others are too, privacy issue indeed. i havent quite figured the filters out, or is that only for paying accounts?

Filters are good! And you can do them with the free accounts no problem.

You create a set of "Custom Friends" groups, eg My Students, or Overseas Dancers, or Family, or whatever you like, and add people to each group from your friends list. Then when you post something you want only that group to read, at the foot of the posting page where it says "Show this entry to:", you select Custom, which brings up your list of friends groups, and you tick whichever groups you want to be able to read the post.
