Life is looking up again. My Mum came in on Monday, and, to my surprise, didn't start yelling at me for not taking the job. She said that the person who I'd begun working with in the college (not the scary phone people) wanted me to work with her if my university timetable allowed it. Which it does. And the work is for an indeffinate time period
