APRIL FOOLS!
(Kidding! Scroll down…)
Still a little surprised that the ADA invited her for coffee, Detective Olivia Benson held the door open for Alexandra Cabot as they entered the newest coffeehouse on the block.
“Thank you, Detective.” Alex smiled as she stepped through the open door. They went to the counter to place their order. Even though Olivia argued, Alex insisted on paying for her coffee. They took their lattes and found an empty table.
“Thanks for the coffee, Alex, but I wasn't expecting you to treat.” The detective looked across the small table at her colleague.
Alex waved her hand at the detective. “It’s just a cup of coffee, Olivia. Besides, it was my invitation. I’ve wanted to try this place ever since it opened, but haven’t had the chance. I thought our little unexpected recess was probably the best chance I’ll have this week.” She smiled at Olivia. “I’m glad you came along.” Alex picked up her cup and took a sip.
Olivia nodded as she sipped her own coffee. She glanced around the coffeehouse and noticed a small stage in the corner with a couple of stools and a microphone.
“So, what do you like to do for fun?” Alex asked, thinking this was a good opportunity to get to know the detective a little better.
Alex’s question didn’t really register with Olivia who was studying the posters advertising upcoming musical performances. She was a little amused by the name of the band playing that night, so she read it aloud. “Ménage à Trois?”
Alex almost choked on her last sip. She sputtered slightly and cleared her throat. “Pardon?”
Olivia laughed. “Sorry. I guess that’s the name of a band.”
“What?! Where?!”
A little surprised at Alex’s somewhat animated reaction, Olivia nodded toward the poster. “There’s a poster over there. I guess they’re playing here.”
“When?!” Alex turned to look at the poster.
“I take it you’re a fan?” Olivia didn’t mean to sound as skeptical as she did.
Alex turned back to Olivia and gave her a smirk. “No, but I know them.” Olivia cocked one eyebrow. “Well, I don’t know them, but a one of them is the younger sister of a friend."
“Interesting name.”
“It’s two girls and a guy.”
“I know what it means, Alex. I meant it was an interesting name for a band.”
Another smirk. “The band is two girls and a guy. Apparently they were trying to come up with a catchy name that people would remember and someone suggested that as a joke and it stuck.”
Olivia nodded. “That’s pretty catchy, I guess.”
“Kris keeps telling me that I need to hear them play when I have a chance.”
“Looks like you’ll have your chance tonight.”
“We could meet back here after work…”
“We?”
“You seemed rather intrigued. I thought you might like to join me. Unless you have other plans.”
Olivia hesitated. “Uh… No. No plans.”
Noticing Olivia’s hesitation, Alex relented. “It’s OK, Olivia. It was just a suggestion. I can see if Kris would like to join me instead. She’s probably planning to be here anyway.”
“What time?”
Alex smiled. “I’m in court all afternoon, and I’d like to go home and change… Can I call you later and let you know?”
“Sure.” Olivia sipped her coffee and wondered why she felt like she had just accepted a date with her ADA. They finished their coffees and Alex went back to the courthouse while Olivia returned to the precinct.

At 5:30, Olivia was still working on paperwork she had been putting off all week, when her cell phone rang. She looked at the display, but still answered in her usual manner. “Benson.”
“Hi, Olivia. It’s Alex.”
“Hi there.”
“I just finished up and I’m heading home to change. Are we still on for tonight?”
Olivia glanced at her watch and said, “Sure. What time?”
“How about 7:30? I think the band starts around eight.”
“I have a little more paperwork to finish, but I’m pretty sure I can make that. See you then.”
“Don’t get lost in your paperwork and stand me up…”
Olivia chuckled. “You know me well. I’m writing myself a note.” She scribbled a reminder on a post-it note and stuck it on her computer. “I’ll see you there.” She hung up the phone and looked across her desk to find her partner eyeing her curiously.
“Hot date, Liv?”
“No, just meeting a friend.” She wasn’t sure why, but she really didn’t want to tell Elliot that she was meeting Alex for something non-work related.
Elliot smiled and returned to his own paperwork, glancing up at his partner periodically. A short while later, Olivia stood up to stretch and take a bathroom break. When she exited the squad room, Fin looked at Elliot and chuckled quietly.
“It’s killin’ you, isn’t it?”
“What?”
“Not knowin’ who Benson’s goin’ out with later.”
Elliot flipped him off with a smirk and went back to his paperwork.
At 7:00, Olivia looked at her watch and began tidying up her desk. She removed the post-it reminder from her computer and crumpled it, tossing it in the small trashcan beside her desk. “I’m calling it a night. See you guys tomorrow.”
Elliot looked up at his partner, gave a small smile and went back to his paperwork. “See you tomorrow, Liv.”
She gave her partner a curious look. “Fin and Munch are on tonight, so what are you still doing here?”
“Just gonna finish this report and I’m outta here.”
Olivia went to her locker to retrieve her leather jacket and exited the squad room.
Elliot looked up to see Fin watching him curiously. “You gonna follow her?”
“No.” He paused for a beat. “Maybe.” Another beat. “No. She would rip me a new one if she caught me.”
Fin smirked and stood up walking over to Olivia’s desk. “Some detective you are.” He reached into the trashcan and retrieved the crumpled post-it. He smoothed the small page and read the reminder Olivia had written to herself. His eyes widened. “Daaamn.” He drew the word out as he looked at Elliot.
Elliot looked at him, wondering what his partner wrote that evoked such a response. “What?”
“Just when you think you know somebody…”
“What does it say?”
Fin handed Elliot the post-it and he read his partner’s hurriedly written note. 7:30 - Alex - M à Trois.
Elliot’s eyes bulged. “Holy shit!”
“You don’t think that’s…”
“No! No way!”
“How many other Alexes she know?”
Elliot crumpled the note again and tossed it back into the wastebasket. “Not going there.”
Fin shook his head. “Shoulda followed her.”
Elliot gave him a look. “If it was your partner, would you follow him?”
Fin rolled his eyes. “I don’t wanna know who would have a threesome with my partner.”
Elliot shook his head. “This has gotta be some sort of a joke. I’m not falling for it.” He leaned back in his chair with a smug look on his face. “She’s probably waiting in the hallway or downstairs to bust my chops when I try to follow her.”
Fin frowned. “That would mean she knew you were gonna read the post-it.”
Elliot shrugged. “You’re the one who fished it out of the trash.”
“I just beat you to it, is all,” Fin said defensively.
Munch walked in during the middle of the conversation. “Beat you to what?”
“Did you just come in from downstairs?” Elliot asked.
“Yeah, why?”
“Did you see Liv on your way in?”
“No. Was I supposed to?”
Elliot looked skeptical. “Are you in on it?”
Munch smirked. “And you call me paranoid. What are you talking about?”
After a brief rundown of events, Munch walked over and pointed to the calendar. “It’s April Fools’ Day, Elliot. I think you’ve been had.”

Olivia walked into the squad room the next morning to find three sets of eyes watching her enter. She slowed her gait and said hesitantly, “Morning, guys.”
Fin nodded, Munch smirked, and Elliot smiled and said, “Morning, Liv. Have a good evening?”
She looked curiously at her partner as she continued to her desk. “Yes,” she answered hesitantly, still not sure what was going on with her fellow detectives. She looked back at the other two who were still watching her. “What’s wrong with you all? Is there something I should know about?”
Elliot smiled. “The better question is: is there something we should know about?”
Olivia frowned. “What are you talking about?”
“What did you do last night?”
Olivia stared for a moment, wondering what was prompting her partner to practically interrogate her. “I went out with friends, why?”
Elliot smirked. “Friends?”
Olivia was beginning to get a little irritated. “Yeah. You gotta problem with that?”
“How many friends?”
“Elliot, what the hell is wrong with you?” She turned her glare on Munch and Fin, who both suddenly seemed to find something of great interest on their desks.
Sensing his partner’s hostility, Elliot frowned. “You’re not gonna carry out your little joke?”
Olivia looked at him like he was speaking a foreign language. “What joke? What are you talking about?”
“April Fools’ Day?” Elliot answered with uncertainty creeping into his voice.
“Elliot, the only fool I see right now is you,” Olivia huffed. “If there’s something you want to ask me, then quit beating around the bush and ask.”
Elliot held up his hands in surrender. “OK, OK. Sorry. I guess there was a misunderstanding.” He glanced at Fin who gave him a slight shrug and then went back to his paperwork.
Elliot sat in silence for a moment longer, but he just couldn’t stand it. “So, you and Alex…”
Olivia’s head snapped up from the file she had picked up. “How did you know I was with Alex?”
Elliot quickly cut his eyes over to Fin and then back to his partner. “Lucky guess.”
Olivia’s eyes narrowed as she realized something was a little off, but she had no idea how Elliot would know she was out with Alex. And then she decided that it really didn’t matter if he did. “We went to a coffeehouse and ended up meeting a friend of hers.”
Elliot’s eyes widened and Fin dropped his pen. Elliot cleared his throat. “So there were three of you?”
Olivia frowned, wondering what was really up with her partner. “It’s nice to know you can count, Elliot. Now, why are you so curious about what I did and who I was with last night?”
“He knows the what, he’s more interested in the who,” Munch said quietly to Fin.
Apparently it wasn’t as quiet as he thought, since Olivia’s head whipped around toward Munch. “What did you say?”
Munch nervously cleared his throat, but Elliot was getting frustrated. “Oh, c’mon, Liv. You put a freaking post-it note on your computer that said you were meeting Alex. We want to know who put the three in your threesome.”
Olivia frowned. “Who put the three in…,” she repeated and then her eyes widened when she remembered the reminder she had written to herself. “You guys think…?” She glared at each one of them causing them all to squirm a little.
“We saw the post-it,” Elliot offered with a shrug.
“You mean the one I threw in the trash?” She glared, accusingly.
Elliot hesitated. “I saw it before you threw it away.”
“Then why not give me the third degree before I left last night?”
“Someone’s giving the third degree without me?” Alex’s voice suddenly sounded from the door to the squad room.
Four sets of surprised eyes focused on the ADA, but Olivia recovered first as Alex walked in.
“They found the note I wrote reminding me to meet you for ‘Ménage à Trois’ and they’re just dying to know who- How did you say it, Elliot? ‘Who put the three in our threesome?’”
Alex’s eyes widened and Olivia tilted her head waiting for a response. Alex opened her mouth to speak and then hesitated as she looked back at Olivia as if unsure of how best to respond. Olivia shrugged and said, “They seem to think it’s a joke, so I say we just roll with it.”
The other three detectives began to fidget when there was still no denial from the ADA. Finally, Elliot broke the silence. “We know it was an April Fools joke. You two can quit the charade…” The withering glare he got in return from Alex caused his accompanying smile to fade slightly.
“What’s foolish, Detective Stabler, is that apparently you think we would actually kiss and tell. So to speak…” She then turned to Olivia and winked. “Right, Liv?”
Olivia smirked. “My lips are sealed.”
Alex chuckled quietly and lowered her voice. “That’s not what you said last night…”
Olivia smiled coyly and gestured with a sideways nod. “Join me in the ladies room?”
You could have heard a pin drop in the squad room as three slack-jawed, wide-eyed detectives watched the two women link arms and walk out.

“Did we really just do that?” Alex asked with a grin as the door to the restroom closed behind them.
Shaking her head, Olivia chuckled as she answered. “To be detectives, sometimes they can be really dense.”
“Or just men,” Alex added.
Olivia nodded. “I say we just go with it and let them think what they want. If they’re gonna make it this easy to yank their chains, how can we resist?”
“So you’re saying you don’t really want to have a threesome with me? Alex asked with mock disappointment.
“Not really.” Olivia paused for a beat. “Although, a twosome might be nice.” Alex’s eyes widened and Olivia quickly amended her statement. “But, why don’t we start with dinner and see where it goes?”
Alex grinned again. “I think we’d be foolish not to.”
