"Here's the thing," he says to Beth, quietly. "I think at some level you know it'd be a bad idea to work for Wolfram & Hart. I think you don't know why, but part of you knows you should stay away from them. That's why you're afraid."
"Some of 'em, yeah," he admits. "There's some right gits on the Council. But it's not like the bad old days. The Slayers outnumber the Watchers, or damn near. And they've got Buffy. I told you about her. Nobody's ever managed to control our Buffy," he carefully does not look at Angel, "I'd back her against the entire rest of the lot with one hand tied behind her." Which, come to think of it, he pretty much had.
"You won't have to drink the Kool-aid, pet. If they give you shit, you let me know and I'll come bust you out myself."
"I don't think that'll be necessary, Spike," says Andrew, and his tone is the businesslike one Spike's only heard a few times before. "Wood's still in town. I'm sure he can arrange for transportation."
To Beth, a little more gently, he adds "It's part of his job. Finding new Slayers and helping them get to the Academy. Him making the offer to you is exactly what Emma was trying to prevent."
"We could call him over," Spike suggests. It sounds like he's agreeing to what Beth asked, but it is really a subtle modification. "Or Andrew could take you to meet him."
Spike doesn't trust Wood alone with Beth. He won't hurt the girl, he's not that kind of bastard, but let him come on too strong and Beth could decide the fire was even creepier than the frying pan.

"I ... I don't even know how to get there."

Spike interrupts. "I'll take you." He pauses, then adds anticlimactically, "If you're willing to catch the redeye."

At Andrew's nod, Beth draws a deep shaky breath.
"Maybe ... maybe I should meet him."

"Wood? Wells. Yeah, do you have a minute?"
He glances at Beth, and gives her a reassuring smile.
"Uh-huh. Yeah, we've had an interesting development. Can you and maybe one or two of your girls get here anytime soon?..."
