Summary: To Hangeng high school was completely boring and uneventful but all that changes when a new mysterious transfer student arrives. His name is Heechul and instantly Hangengs finds himself taken in by the others beauty. Will they become friends or will Heechul ignore him like he does to the other students?
MASTERLIST Part one here His leg were doing no better than the rest of his body, they burned from all the running he had been doing. Dr Park had made him go back to school after only spending two minutes with Heechul. Hangeng had to run and when he got to class the teacher didn’t seem to mind. Like always they seemed like different people whenever Heechul wasn’t around. Was he the only one who found it incredibly annoying?
Hangeng sped up as his destination loomed into view. He stretched his hand out and opened the door. Good no one was home yet. He placed his hands on his bended knees as he tried to regain his breath.
“Do you have anything to say for yourself?”
Hangengs head snapped up. His mum stood there in front of his arms crossed. Hangeng gulped. His mum was the sweetest thing in the whole world but when she got mad, with thankfully wasn’t often, she would reap havoc.
“Um…I’m home?”
His mum just gave him an ‘I’m not amused’ look. Hangeng scratched his head sleepily.
“Your school called”
Ah now that would explain it. Oh shit the school called! What did they say?! In Hangengs head he was holding his mum by the shoulder shaking her trying to get the information. A cold shiver ran through his spine.
“Well…”
His mum tapped her foot against the floor waiting for a response. She must be really angry with him. They had to move from China to give him a better education. They had to leave all their family, all their loved ones behind to give their son the best chance at life. They did it to ensure he didn’t have to struggle the way they did. Hangeng hung his head in shame.
“I can explain… mum I just had to …why are you smiling?”
A glowing smile had swept across his mothers face.
“Oh I just can’t hold it in. The school called and baby they said that you got all A+ on your classes. Oh I’m so happy …”
Hangeng tuned his mother out at that moment. The school had said that? Wasn’t it a bit strange? Why hadn’t they told her that her son had left the school grounds during school hours? Hangeng sensed a hidden motive. They must be up to something…but what? Hangengs mum threw her hands around him and pulled him into a huge hug. He snapped out of his thinking and hugged her back.
It was so nice to be back in his room. All during dinner his mother and father couldn’t stop smiling. He felt so bad, so guilty but most importantly he felt worried. He buried himself in his homework attempting to be what his parents thought he was. His mind would constantly slip into thoughts about Heechul he would catch himself, shake it off and force himself to concentrate of the Korean words that stared up at him from the page.
An hour and a half later he collapsed on his bed. I wonder what is Heechul doing now? Is he taking care of his ankle? What a stupid question he was in a hospital of course his ankle would be taken care of. Hangeng sighed. From what Dr Park had said the injury should have been painful. So why did Heechul seem unaffected. That’s just the way Heechul is. Heechul barely registers anything. It almost as if he’s not fully aware of his surroundings. Sometime to Hangeng it feels like Heechuls mind is off in it’s own world.
Oh what he would give to be let inside. What he would give to have that voice grace itself upon his ears. A smile spread across his face. Heechul had spoken and better yet he had said his name. Hangeng gasped and placed a hand over his chest. What was this feeling? He felt so warm almost as if there was a glow inside his chest. Whatever it was, whatever it was called. It felt nice. The warm feeling spread out through his entire body. Everything that had plagued is mind vanished to be replace by lulling waves of sleep.
It was kind of boring being a school without Heechul. The class just seemed to drag on, the teachers seemed to drag on and even the students were just plain annoying. Hangeng sighed and lay across the table of where he would usually drag Heechul. The sun felt warm against his skin. Hangeng closed his eyes and let his mind wonder. It was filled with many beautiful things. Traces of Heechul weaved through the wonderful thoughts making them even better. Hangeng found it amazing just how much Heechul was incorporated into his life.
A shadow fell over him taking away the warmth of the sun. Hangeng opened his eyes and saw a girl standing in front of him. If there was one thing his mum stressed to him it was to be the perfect gentleman around any female. Hangeng immediately sat up.
“Ummm is there something you want?”
The girls face turned bright red. She lowered her head slightly so her dark brown fringe covered most of her face then held something out in her hands.
“Umm I wanted you to have these”
Hangeng look up from the flowers to the very softly spoken girl. He recognised her from his class. She was one of the ones that wasn’t mean like the other kids when he first came here.
“You don’t like them?”
She looked up at him eyes watering. Hangengs mum in his head was waving a stick around yelling at him. Never keep a lady waiting and most of all Hangeng, are you listening to me…Good never ever make a girl cry. Hangeng reach out and took the flowers, he leaned his nose close letting their fragrance fill his sense of smell.
“They smell beautiful, though it seems like of backwards, shouldn’t the guy give the girl flowers instead”
She looked at him wide eyed. Not in a bad way though. It was a look Hangeng imagined someone would have on their face when a Genie granted a deeply desired wish or in this case just a look of relief and admiration. Hangeng pulled the prettiest flower out of the three and put it in the girls hair. He face went the colour of a tomato.
“Are you sick?”
The girl shook her head from side to side. Hangeng fought the urge to raise an eyebrow. This girl was surly acting weird. Maybe she had a fever her face was bright red after all. She quickly thanked him and ran away.
“Well…that was weird”
Hangeng looked down at the two remaining flowers in his hand. Maybe he should get some flowers for Heechul. Did Heechul even like flowers? Hangeng groaned and flopped back down on the table. There was so much about Heechul that he didn’t understand. So much that he didn’t know about the other. Well at least he knew one thing and that was Heechul did have the ability to use his voice.
Hangeng didn’t get it. If Heechul could speak why didn’t he. After all humans draw meaning from posture and the tone of a voice. From what Hangeng had heard yesterday Heechul voice was absolutely beautiful. Maybe it was better that Heechul stayed quiet. Talking leads to lies. This world was full of them. The world was black full of deception and deceit but… it was also white filled with truth and honesty. Being a human there’s just no way to win.
Hangeng trudged his way back to the class room when the bell rang. Hangeng noticed the girl that had given him the flowers flushed a deep red. Should he tell her that she should see the nurse? That thought brought him up short. Hangeng clenched his fists trying to control his anger.
“Excuse me”
Hangengs head snapped up. The teacher stood at the front of the class arms crossed and looking at him. She wasn’t the only one everyone else was looking at him. Well he had stopped in the centre of the room. Ever so quickly he made his way to his desk. Hangeng blamed his lack of concentration on that stupid nurse. The words seemed to jumble themselves up. The teacher seemed to droned on and on. It was hard but Hangeng managed to write down everything he needed to know, he even jotted out some extra notes for Heechul. The bell rang out and Hangeng thanked the higher beings.
Everyone left the classroom leaving him all alone. Hangeng bite his lip not knowing what to do he wanted to see Heechul but his parents probably wouldn’t allow it. Hangeng fished his phone out of his pocket. Hangeng was actually grateful that Heechul didn’t talk. He would hate for those lips and that voice to be wasted on lies. Humans could be truly despicable creatures.
“Hey mum”
“Oh hello my A+ son it’s such a nice surprise to hear your voice.”
Hangeng could almost picture that smile that his mum was wearing with pride. It almost made his stomach turn thinking about lying to her.
“Umm mum I was wondering… is it okay if I go over to a friend’s place?”
“A friend’s?”
His mother voice was coated with confusion. He didn’t blame her in the whole time he had been going to this high school he had never mentioned or even breathed the word friend. That word he used to only associate with the people they had to leave in China.
“To be honest it’s because of him that my grades improved. We’ve been studying together during lunch but today he was sick.”
The words burned Hangengs throat. If someone had poured acid down his throat he imagined it would feel something like this. His mum was quiet which made the fire burn even stronger. He felt like a moth being tortured by teenage boys before one produced a lighter and set him on flames.
“Okay just be back for dinner”
Hangeng couldn’t believe it. She had actually bought his lies. He quickly said goodbye and hung up. He felt like an unworthy son. Quickly he packed his bag and walked out of the school grounds. Sometime later he entered the hospital. He was so caught up with worry that he actually walked into someone.
“Oh my I’m so sorry”
Dr Park straightened out his jacket before smiling at him.
“Oh it’s no problem.”
“Is…can I see him?”
Hangeng looked up at him with pleading eyes. Leeteuk frowned and opened his mouth to say something. Mid way he closed his mouth. Hangeng shifted uncomfortably under is gaze. A soft tug licked at Leeteuk lips.
“…Sure, follow me”
Hangeng followed behind him and exhaled a breath he didn’t know he had been holding. He was so scared that Leeteuk would send him away. Leeteuk whirled around when he stopped in front of a door.
“Now I’m just warning you he had surgery today on his ankle. No sharp movements or anything that will jolt his leg. Understand?”
Hangeng nodded sincerely. The last thing he wanted was to make Heechuls condition worse. The doctor was about to walk away when he called out to him.
“Dr Park”
“Please just call me Leeteuk”
Hangeng bit his lip but nodded.
“Umm I was just wondering about…um…he has…never mind”
Leeteuks eyes softened and he walked up to Hangeng and placed a caring hand on his shoulder. Leeteuk understood very well that Hangeng was trying to ask.
“You seem like a good friend Hankyung take care of him for me okay?”
Hangeng nodded before walking into the room. Leeteuk crossed his fingers and hoped Hangeng was as sincere as he seemed to be. He felt something burning holes in his head so he turned around. Kyuhyun had his arms crossed over his arms and shook his head before stalking off. Leeteuk didn’t need to be a mind reader to know that Kyuhyun thought he was making a mistake. Leeteuk just hoped and prayed that Kyuhyun was wrong.
“Hey Heechul it me Hangeng”
Hangeng walked over to Heechuls bed. Heechul had his eyes closed. Was he sleeping? Hangeng smiled and put the flowers he had brought with him in a vase next to the bed. This Heechul looked so peaceful. Sadness plagued Hangeng. Heechul looked so much better, so full of life when he was sleeping instead of when he was awake. It was supposed to be the other way around. Hangeng reached over and pushed some hair out of Heechul face. He held a breath the when sleeping boy stirred. He sighed softly when the breathing returned to the slow pattern of someone sleeping.
Hangeng pulled his books out of his bag and started doing his home work. It would be just a bit to creepy to watch Heechul while he slept. Besides he was supposed to be studying so he might as well get some of the work done. He concentrated hard not letting his eyes wonder and explore the face of the sleeping boy. He sighed when he only had five more small maths problems to do. He looked up and nearly jumped when he saw eyes looking at him. A hand came over his chest.
“Oh you scared me, I didn’t realise you were up. Look I brought you some flowers, aren’t they pretty?”
Hangeng looked at them using it as an excuse to calm his still-recovering-from-the-scare heartbeat. He looked towards Heechul and smiled. The other boy didn’t move, his eyes didn’t wonder either. He just continued to stare at Hangeng.
“Now you’re probably going to groan and what to strangle me but I brought you a copy of all the work you missed on today”
Hangeng held the multiple sheets of paper for Heechul to see. Hangeng launched into a detailed account of everything that happened that day including the girl who had given him the flowers.
“…You should have seen her, her face was as red as a tomato. She’s probably sick, hmm I hope it’s not contagious I…”
Heechul finger twitched. Was Heechul trying to tell him something? Nah he was probably thinking too much into it. Hangeng reached over when he spotted the time on his watch.
“Oh damn I have to go. Mums going to kill me”
Hangeng quickly started packing his things away. He crammed all his books inside his bag in a hurry. Once it was zipped up he turned to Heechul.
“Now you have to do everything to doctors say okay? Get better quickly so that I can keep you company all day”
Hangeng smiled down at Heechul before he started walking to the door. A hand a quick as lightning clamped around his wrist. Hangengs head whirled around.
“Hee…”
“H-Han, Hankyung”
Hangeng smiled and placed a hand over Heechuls one. He moved in and gave Heechul a hug being careful not to move the others ankle.
“Go to sleep I’ll be back tomorrow. I promise”
By the time Hangeng let go of Heechul his eyes were closed. He lightly squeezed Heechul hand before he walked as fast as he could out of the hospital. Once he was outside he ran like the wind.
A figure watched Hangeng leave the room Heechul was in. Looking around to make sure nobody saw them they snuck into Heechul room. The tall figure loomed over the sleeping boy. They ran a finger down the length of the suspended ankle. Heechul twitched in his sleep unaware of the person leaning over him.
Kyuhyun walked out of Heechul room with a glare on his face. He grabbed Leeteuk shoulder and caused him to whirl around.
“Are you stupid!”
“Nice to see you too Dr Cho”
Hangeng was surprised when his mum didn’t kill him. In fact she seemed in a very good mood. She asked him how study went and he told her it went good. Well at least that wasn’t a lie. Hangeng lay in bed that night. He held the wrist that Heechul had grabbed up against the moon light filtering through his window. Heechul hand had felt so warm and soft. Hangeng sigh. I wonder what caused Heechul to do that. He stretched letting out a yawn. Sleep claimed him quickly.
Hangeng was in a very good mood when he got to school. He still couldn’t get it out of his mind the way Heechul had grabbed his arm. It was one of the strongest reactions that Heechul had ever made. He closed he eyes and hear that sweet voice calling his name.
“H-han, Hankyung”
“Hankyung!”
BANG. Hangeng jumped at the sound of a roller being hit against a desk. He opened his eyes and saw the teacher starting at him with a displeased look.
“Principal’s office now”
Hangeng groaned under his breath but got his things and made his way to the principal’s office. Great this is just what I need he thought in a sarcastic tone. Hangeng knocked on the intimidating door of the principal’s office.
“Come in”
Hangeng took a big deep breath in. to prepare himself. Like any other teenage kid he hated being lectured. He opened the door and closed it behind him. The first thing he knew he was not alone. That stupid nurse was also there. Hangeng was confused what the hell was she doing here! Another question would be why the hell was the office covered with fish and blue coloured things? Hangeng turned is head from the slightly sea themed room to the principal. This was his first time actually meeting with him.
“Take a seat Hankyung”
Those brown eyes shined with kindness. The chocolate brown hair swayed slightly as he gestured towards the chair. Hangeng took a seat sensing there was more to this then first appeared. The principal held out a bowl of candy that was next to a sign reading Principal Lee Donghae. Hangeng eyed the bowl but took one. Donghae smiled down at he as the placed the bowl back down on the counter. That smile quickly turned into a frown.
“ Mr Hankyung do you know why you’re here?”
“Umm because I was caught sleeping in class?”
Donghaes lips tugged slightly at the corner but he kept a grave face.
“No well that’s not good either. You should be sleeping in class but that is not the reason you are here”
Confusion washed over Hangeng if he hadn’t been called for that then what was he called for? E had a sneaky suspicion that it had something to do with that stupid nurse.
“We’ve had a complaint, that one of our students left the school grounds a couple of days ago…”
Hangeng gulped. Were they going to expel him? What would his parents say? He could also see their disappointed faces in his head. They would ask where they went wrong in raising a son like him. Hangeng slumped his head forward in shame.
“We’ve been asked to view the condition and status of our care facilities. This very capable nurse has informed me that she did look the boy in question over.”
Hangengs fist clenched. Of course she would say that. Unfortunately it was something that he couldn’t deny she had looked at Heechul but she didn’t do anything about it. Donghae held up a sheet of paper in his hands. Donghae opened his mouth to say something but was interrupted by a knock on the door.
“Come in”
Hangeng eyes widened when he saw who it was. Dr Park…what was he doing here? Leeteuk greeted all the of them and took a seat I an unused chair. Donghae cleared his throat.
“As I was saying her report shows that she did everything that was necessary. Let me ask you a question was Mr Kim Heechul is any pain when you brought him to her?”
“Not that he showed”
Donghae nodded.
“Then don’t you think she did everything needed. If Heechul wasn’t in any pain there would be no reason to treat him”
WHAT!? No reason to treat him. Hangeng fist clenched in anger. Heechuls ankle had been sticking out at an awkward ankle how could that be ignored just because he didn’t show any pain. Hangeng ground his teeth in anger.
“Maybe so…”
All heads turned to Leeteuk as he spoke.
“Mr Kim might not have shown any signs of pain but it should have been noticed that his ankle was not sitting properly. Whether a patient is showing sign of pain or not in that circumstance they should always be treated.”
The principal couldn’t argue with that not when a fully licensed doctor was in the room. Donghae looked Leeteuk up and down before looking away.
“I suppose your right Dr Park. Well I suppose I have no choice”
Donghae turned his head to the burse and gave her a sympathetic look. Before he could say anything Leeteuk spoke.
“Might I be so kind to suggest re-training? That way you get to keep her as a nurse”
The nurse changed from glaring at Leeteuk to looking hopefully at Donghae. Donghae sighed.
“Hankyung, Dr Park thank you for your time. You may leave now”
Hangeng bowed and quickly rushed out of the room. His fists clenched with anger. That stupid nurse would still be working here. A soft hand on his shoulder made him jump.
“Ah oh thank you for sticking up for Heechul”
The doctor smiled.
“Well what I said was all true so you don’t need to thank me”
Hangeng opened his mouth to protest but is brain thought of something more important.
“How is Heechul?”
Leeteuks eyes softened.
“You really care about him don’t you?”
Hangeng felt his face flush.
“You know he is very lucky to have a friend like you”
Leeteuk patted his head before walking off. Hangeng didn’t even realise that Leeteuk had never answer his question. He skipped his way to class back to class which seemed to fly by. The bell rang and he quickly ran past everyone else. He just had this strong need to see Heechul. What he saw at the gate made him stop.
“Mum? Dad? What are you doing here?”
His mum pulled him into a strong embrace. They seemed to radiate happiness.
“Oh everything in perfect now”
Hangeng was pulled away from the school by his parents. He just really wanted to get to Heechul but the there was no way he could do it not with both his parents clinging to his arms. They went to some big fancy restaurant. Immediately Hangeng sensed something weird. There was no way they could afford to eat here. He politely tried to suggest a restaurant that their budget could handle but his parents waved him off.
What had caused his parents mind to slip from reality? Maybe this was a mid life crisis. Hangeng started hard at the face of both of them looking for any sign. Was there a true sign for mid-life crisis? They seemed normal enough. Maybe they were growing delusional. That can’t be right they weren’t even close to the age where they were supposed to lose their mind. They waited until desert came to drop the bomb shell on Hangeng.
“Your father got a promotion.”
Hangeng eyes widened in shock and he whipped his head toward his dad. That would explain at lot. Happiness bubbled up inside him.
“Wow congratulations dad.”
Now Hangeng was in on it he was able to share their happiness. This would only be better for their family. Hangeng smiled at them. He was truly happy for all of them, his dad had worked so hard and now it was all paying off. His parents drove up to the beach. They all walked out the small grain of sand getting it in between their toes but never minding. This was something they rarely got to do. The sun was low on the horizon creating an orange glow.
They held hands and watched the beautiful view. Their heart bubbled with happiness. Hangeng squeezed his mums hand. His left hand felt suddenly empty he looked to the side. He knew what he was missing. Heechul should be here with him. If Heechul could see this beaut that the world held maybe things would get better. Upon the orange sky Hangeng made a promise, a promise that wasn’t for himself but for the boy whose hand he longed to grasp, Kim Heechul.
A/n: Okay you may have notice that i have change the length of this story from '3' to '?'. Originally i planned on making this only three chapters long but I've realised that i can do some much with this fic so it'll will be longer then three chapters but i'm not exactly sure how long. High school bullying is such a controversial and touchy topic, i just want to say that nothing in this story is deliberate put out to hurt any body. I am a strong believer in speaking up against bullying because the worst thing we can do it stay silent.
