"No, I haven't anyone else to harass at the moment, so I thought I might as well come make sport of you," he grinned in jest. "I am only teasing. I had some contracts to drop off in the office and thought I would see how you're getting on. Elizabeth and Rupert tell me you are doing well with the books, not that we have that much to keep track of yet, but that is another thing I wanted to talk to you about."
Rabastan looked at his brother's wonderful paintings and sketches hanging on the walls and panels with a mixture of pride and sadness. Rodolphus was so talented. It was such a waste to keep himself so locked up with his art he could not live. He sighed inwardly, knowing that problem was not likely to be solved any time soon.
"I also wanted to ask you about Paris," he smiled.
"Ah, so I'm to function as a source of amusement as well? That wasn't in the job description, I'll have you know," Su teased back with a smile. "I'm doing well, I think. I'm learning so much, and really excited about being in charge." She smiled at his praise. "The first day was rough until I got the hang of the books, but it's not nearly as complex as I'd feared."
Su noticed Rabastan's gaze wander for a moment. "He is talented, isn't he," she commented softly.
"Paris? What about it?" Su asked, puzzled. "I've been there once, ages ago, and have forgotten all my schoolgirl French."
Rabastan dramatically slapped his hand to his heart, "It isn't? I will have to have stern words with Elizabeth then. Being a general source of amusement for me is standard boilerplate, along with the 'and other duties as assigned' bit. Must not forget that one. I might need a cup of coffee some day and have to send someone or another off to fetch it for me," he chuckled.
"He is. Did I tell you I really had no idea until this year that he was so talented? I remember him as a boy with paints, but not this," he swept his arm around.
"I want you to take a minor apprenticeship in a magical gallery in France as well. Mrs. Malfoy is arranging it for us with the owners who are friends of her father's I believe. I think I'd prefer to wait for you to begin that until after the first of the year, though. This will give you a chance to finish in London and be here during the holiday season."
Su giggled. "I think I'm good at being amusing. If all else fails, I'm quite creative when I speak Mandarin." Rabastan already knew that, of course, having caught some of her more flowery profanity. "And aren't there spells for brewing coffee, so you don't need to send your poor employees out in this freezing weather?" Su gave a dramatic and completely unnecessary shiver.
"You didn't, but I've only recently realized that my own brother is an adult, and that was when he got married. It's silly, but when you grow up with a person it's so easy to see them as they once were instead of how they are now." She smiled. "He does have a gift."
Su stared at Rabastan for a moment before breaking out in a huge smile. "Really? Paris? That sounds wonderful, and I'd love to have a chance to learn more about the magical versus muggle side of the business." She paused, struck by a sudden thought. "Do they speak English? I suppose if I work hard I can learn some basic French by January, but some of the vocabulary is so specialized..."
