Molly paced back and forth in the kitchen area of her tent, trying to calm her nerves, as she renewed her preparations for the evening.

Luckily, she had a bit if a knack with the kitchen gardening, and vegetables and herbs weren't in short supply in her home, despite the infestation of gnomes this past summer. She had preserved many of the vegetables, and filled the dry cellar with onions and braids of garlic, mounds of lyed potatoes, and a few crates of other root vegetables. She had boiled a fair amount of those potatoes, and set them with a warming charm that would last for several hours. Any leftovers would go well for the fry-up in the morning.

Some of the greener products of the garden wouldn't last much longer, even with preservation charms, now that winter was settling in. She would have to be sure to send some home with each of the kids, and see about distributing some of them around town. They would also be useful to barter with, and she needed some more flour and sugar, some milk - tinned, powedered or fresh, made little difference, though she wondered if anyone had a good milk cow or two. Her larder was getting a bit bare aside from the harvest, and she'd had to resort to a flourless torte for one of the puddings this evening, using up the last of her cocoa powder as well.

The chicken coop needed serious repairs before even colder weather decended. She'd had to resort to tromping over half the yard to round up enough eggs, this morning, and one of her old hens had been sacrificed to the stock pot as well.

There were plenty of fresh salads - tossed, carrot and apple, and slaw - prepared, and she'd managed, quite disdainfully, to butcher a wild hog that she had found rooting in her onion patch the other evening. She'd set the ribs to marinating for the grill, and managed a nice ham shank for a roast.

The grill was set outside, and hopefully, she could get one of the boys to manage it. She also would like them to move the dining set to the tent that she had arranged for that purpose. She had managed some repairs to the picnic tables, but they were a bit shabby, and the weather was quite crisp in the evening, even with warming charms. She imagined that the fire pit would be quite a gathering place this eveing, and she had double checked the tinder and stones yesterday afternoon.

Pumpkin juice and cider were in good supply, and she imagined that some spirits would probably make their appearrance this evening, if she turned a blind eye to their presence. She didn't care for the idea, but they were all grown now, her children, and she didn't quite begrudge their need for a bit of a nip. There was a time and place, after all.

Now, she just waited for them to begin to arrive. She sighed deeply, and turned on the wireless, wrapping her arms around herself, and wishing that Arthur was here to take her in his arms, and whisper calming words in her ear. She missed him, ever so much, and now that her family was coming home, his absence seemed like a gaping tear inside of her.
