With over a thousand members in the community, the 62 new additions only represent a 6.0% growth to start off the tournament. The average of 409 votes per contest this week not only indicates minority judging of the competitors, but also remains consistent with the expected turnout for the tough and close-call matchups this week. This coming week features more veterans and rookies battling for their respective places among the bracketed competitors.
PRELIMINARIES LEG I
Four matches earned the spotlight from this opening poll, although a few competitors have been singled out for some extra attention. In the battle for the biggest landslide victory were Sp0RK's Mannheim and JTigerclaw, the Luskwood creation beating out the Don't Hug Cacti tiger by one in earned votes and by three in margin of victory, even though the latter's victory over the Talutie creation Frost Bight had one more vote than the former's faceoff against the now-eliminated Furducers creation A.G. Silver Shepherd. The creator-owned competition between Titana Crotu and Loriana saw a late see-saw battle for votes end in a win for the fox by five, but was outdone in the closest match category by Durango Dingo's Bitzer and Frysco's Tseatah as the Arend Studios creation rallied on the final day of the poll to oust the Roofur creation by only two votes for a 0.5% margin of victory.
Honorable Mentions: Tourney organizer Exile Huscoon scores the trifecta with his third first-match loss, this time to the Furr Happens creation Raptor Red.... The other Furr Happens creation, Nanook123's Sid, lost against the Mixed Candy Creation Frisbee in a matchup with the highest turnout of the leg at 408 total votes.... While the creator-owned North Puppy had a new picture and still lost against the Mixed Candy creation Frost T. Wolf, the creator-owned Lucky Coyote had an outdated picture and still won against the Arend Studios creation Spark.
PRELIMINARIES LEG II
The Dauntless Division preliminaries closed up with one Barbados Region matchup pulling the most votes out of all the pairings this week with 426 between the Frazzle creation Jaggers and Kyyanno's Arend Studios creation Blizzard, the feasox moving on with a slim 10.26% margin over the snow leopard cheetah (EDIT: sorry Kyy! :). Conversely, the creator-owned battle between Uck and Synthwolf had the lowest turnout of the leg with only 406 votes, with a little over 2-to-1 going to the tiger. The big landslide would have to go to the Mixed Candy creation Lace whose 11-to-1 victory over the Snow Paws Studios creation Chestnut Husky owned by Morton Fox also crowns the black wolf with the highest vote count ever for a single competitor.
Honorable Mentions: The striped cat-fight this week ended with Sodders, the only other Snow Paws Studios creation in the tourney, also being eliminated by the Silent Ravyn creation Darktiger.... While the Don't Hug Cacti creation Jai Dingo fended off the sexy advances of the Mixed Candy creation Ford Shepherd, her Furr Happens creation Fossil Sabertooth was unable to get past the cuteness of the Arend Studios creation Shay... Although the birthday wolf and his keg may have squeaked a win by only 10 votes, the Luskwood creation Keovi battled Baja's Arend Studios creation Rammstein for most of the polling period to finish up as the closest match of the leg with only a 9-vote / 2.13% margin.
PLAYBOOK RECORDS
Although The Playbook only covered the first leg, there were enough picks and enough matchups to provide a solid rating to start off the tourney. Of the 13 matchups in that leg,
4tb correctly tagged 8, a success rate of 61.53%. Here's hoping that the purple bruin can highlight more of his favorites in the coming week.
INTERCEPTOR DIVISION PRELIMINARIES
Much like the Bahamas region was loaded with veterans in the Dauntless preliminaries, so is the Jamaica region in this division. Amarok and Semjay are both returning from the first tournament, but the dragon participated last year and has two rounds of loss experience at 44.23% while the canid only has one round of defeat at a 42.55% rating. The other three repeat fursuits all have rookie opponents, although Crash the Dog was the only one to have made it past the first round last year as Kio was ousted early and Lucky Wolf brings his 0-2 record over the past two tourneys into this year's bracket.
Of the other veterans in the other preliminary matches of this division, only Aiden Raccoon has any experience from the inaugural tournament, although he was not a participant last year. Both Yargo and Rukario are familiar with preliminary matchups, though the latter was the only one to have advanced into the bracket last year. Oreo is the only returning competitor in the Key West region preliminaries, while Bucktown Tiger and Canucks Regional Champion Beef Jerky occupy opposite ends of the Saint Kitts region.
BLACK PEARL DIVISION PRELIMINARIES AND
JOLLY MON DIVISION PRELIMINARIES
As noted last week, only two veterans remain to fight for the right to compete in the actual bracket of this division. Sammy Samoyed is hoping to avoid another one-and-done like last year, and with a 45.9% rating it might be feasible against the rookie Flux. Atpaw is in the same boat but on the opposite side of the Hispaniola region and with a lower rating of 34.98% against another tournament rookie, Waya.
The Santa Lucia regional preliminaries will close out the week with Max Lyon also looking to last longer than one round, hoping the 46.71% rating from last year is a strong start against his rookie opponent Mozee Otter. Twizzler DeLoup finished one round shy of the regional finals last year, but is looking to improve upon that 47.43% finish against Nuka Nuki. The final two veterans of the week will face off against each other as my pick from the first tourney, Cake (57.85%), takes on the first Match of the Week star from last year, Kenova Wolf (56.37%).
Until next week...
